H4 Hella
Anyone have the H4 Hella light conversition? I am looking to upgrad my light and want to know if it is worth the time and money to get the H4. Also, what bulb are you using with it, the one it comes with (55/60) or the brighter (55/100) bulb? How do these bulbs compare and how are they compared to the sealed beam? Do I also need to rewire to install?

I've answered all of your questions over at Rennlist: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=340221
By default, the Hella H4 kits come with stock, DOT-legal 55/60 bulbs. Installing a wiring harness is a good idea; is a must for brighter bulbs.

Thanks, did you test any other types of bulbs? I was thinking of getting the H4's with the 100/55w bulbs...? Also whats your opinion on DOT or E-class lenses? Are the E-class lenses good if you are driving a windy road, since they dont have much light to the sides, Id prefer not to hit a deer!

there is no comparison between DOT lenses and E-codes, get the E-codes, there is no point in doing the upgrade otherwise. The E-codes allow you to run high-wattage bulbs without being offensive to other traffic. If you try to run 90/100s in the DOT lenses you will be getting flashed all the time.
I second the comment that the relay harness is the most important part of this whole upgrade. nate

the E-codes actually have quite a bit of light to the sides. I agree that they're worth it. E-codes, a harness, and even stock wattage bulbs are more than enough - Since my alternator problem a few weeks ago I went back to stock bulbs for troubleshooting purposes - they're pretty good on their own. I didn't have any other bulbs to test with, though if you are getting 55/100's all that's brighter is your high beam. Robby over at Rennlist has some of IceShark's remaining inventory, I think they're Narva 90/100. Pretty white light (vs. the yellowstars). You'd have to PM him over at the 'list for more info.
Go to Rennbay for your harness/lenses (the ones here at Pelican, while good, are DOT lenses, which are bad news with bright bulbs). Travis has a pretty decent bulb selection at Rennbay, too.

What are IceSharks? A type of light bulb? Also, how does the altinator hold up to a bright bulb, like 80/100w xenon or something? I dont want to loose power some night when im driving...

your alternator is rated at 120A - do not worry about it. Even two 100W high beams will not overtax it (200W/14V = less than 15 amps)
IceShark is the handle of the late Dan Wray who put together a real nice headlight upgrade kit which I am running on my '44 now. It was a pair of Cibie H4 reflectors, four 90/100W Narva H4 bulbs (which I have yet to use BTW) a relay harness, and a Transpo adjustable voltage regulator. nate

So this upgrade from iceshark is better than getting the e-code lights? Or whats the differance? Also, whats the point of getting a voltage rejulator and how much would this cost me?

you could melt the stock wiring if you use bulbs that are too high wattage.
all of the questions you've been asking have been answered on here already. just use the search feature.

IceShark kit is what we've been recommending already. What he put together was an all-in-one thing. The adjustable voltage regulator allows you to put more electricity towards the lights, but burns bulbs out faster. Not really a big deal.
In summary: Get harness Get e-code lenses Get bulbs Done. ![]()

Honestly, I've been using DOT lenses with stock bulbs and an upgraded harness for a couple of months now.
do that, if you want to concerve money. Just get yourself a harness. if you want to experiment with it, then get yourself the e-codes. The only difference between the 55/60 and the 55/100 is the high beam. The low beams are both 55 watts - so you wont notice a difference. It's the high beam that's jacked up to 100watts

Eldorado's got a point. Harness is gonna help the most. Let me know if you want to go stock bulbs/DOT lenses - I'll sell you mine if you want to save some $. Shoot me a PM.

Definately get a relay harness!!! You will save untold electrical problems. Even w/ stock lights having good power is essential. Look back through old threads and also the Rennlist ones. I made a couple and they seem to work pretty well. Yours still working Kyle?

sure is, steve... thought I burnt out the pass. side bulb the otehr day, but the bulb just popped outta the socket. plugged it back in, and it's all good to go.
I've got some e-codes on their way to getting here... cant wait for those.. after that I'm gonna get some brighter bulbs.. I've got some "equal to 80W" bulbs in there now.. not sure what their actual wattage is... Bruce actually sourced your harness in that article, steve... kudos to you ![]()

Kyle:
Serial numbers 1 (on my car) & 2 (on yours) of a total worldwide production run of 2 seem to be functional. Steve
