O2 sensor question
for my 84 944:
I Failed Nevada emissions (horribly) CFC and Co2 levels were nearly double (especially at idle) Car is running a bit rough and idling at about 750 RPMS. First thing I'm going to do is change out the o2 sensor.. The car started life in CA and has been there (I believe) most if not all of its life. It lives in Vegas now, and I was wondering if 1) Does it have a CA o2 sensor installed (how can you tell?) 2) Can I replace it with a standard (non-CA) o2 sensor? 3) would it be (better) if I put the more expensive CA o2 sensor in? Ok, a little research and I see that, since my O2 sensor has 3 wires coming off of it, it IS a CA O2 sensor (bummer).
A little more research and I see that the 2 extra wires are for heating the sensor.. So, with that said, one question still remains, do I NEED to get the CA replacement O2 sensor or can I now use the regular single wire type now that the car is in Nevada? Thanks again -9 |
If your car came with a heated sensor, then you should put a heated sensor back in. It's not a California sensor, it's how they have the computer set up to work with the sensor. Put the three wire back on there. There are some that try a generic sensor and I'm not sure how well they work as I've always used the OEM, but do a search on here and that will provide the part number of the generic part number. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll look it up. I think it was on FR Wilk's site as well.

Thanks Razorback.. I don't want to spare any expense if it will sacrifice performance. I'll get the OEM. It would have been nice if the car had the cheaper one, lord knows I have bigger fish to fry on this car and dollars will go to it one way or another. I'm hoping to make this old gal into a awesome machine again, so I'll pay whatever it takes to do it.. One part at a time..

Come on guys! Co2 is what you exhale. CO is what cars (or most anything burning) emits.
And what the heck is CFC's??? Chlorinated Fluro Carbons??? Didn't know that A/C systems were tested as part of the emissions. |
ive heard of guys doing a straight swap and install with the ford 3 wire O2 sensors, they fit, all you need to do is splice the wires on... i havent tried it yet but i understand its a compatible swap. (the ford sensor i think is around 50 bucks?)

This is one at a cheap cheap price and worked perfect.
I had a nasty smog test, changed the o2 sensor with the one linked above and passed with flying colors. Nearly cut all my numbers in half. |
You are not the only one that is confusing a single molecule of oxygen with two molecules. The difference in the Latin di for two and mon for one. Better get past your thin skin when confronted with misunderstandings. These are hobbiest cars as few who own them have the income to take them to a P-car mechanic and do most of their own wrenching.
As to your "CFC" statement; most likely HC's or hydrocarbons. This is the unburnt fuel coming out the tail pipe. The catalytic converter is supposed to catch most of the HC's and CO's and NO (also NOx - nitric oxides or nitrogen with an oxygen molecule or "rusted" nitrogen) before they reach the end of the tailpipe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_oxide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalytic_converter Back to CO and CO2: Yes there is CO2 that comes out of the tailpipe. I put in a generic bosch. I don't recall which model, I found the info on the 'other' forum I believe.

do a search in the turbo 944 section here. the exact part number is listed for a ford 3 wire. i used one, it works great.

Pulled the old one off today and the wires were brittle and cracked all the way to the connector.. Rather than screw with splicing the wires to the universal, I decided to just replace the whole damn thing with the OEM Bosch 13001. Did some shopping and found it cheapest (129.00) at Partstrain.com.
