New Throttle Cam
This site is great! It has helped me so much with this car.
I recently read a thread about the throttle cam. So I ordered one. I just installed it. VERY easy install. AWESOME results too! If I could ever recommend a cheap, simple, upgrade to anyone for this car to make it more fun to drive, it would be the throttle cam! I think it was $30 or something like that. Great investment! Just thought I would share!

The throttle cam is a good and cheap upgrade. I did something similar, but there's a way to drill, cut, flip and put spacers in your old on that you can do it for free pretty much, that's what I did. But then you miss out on the anodizing and coolness factor, instead people are just like "you know you have your throttle cam on upside down?".

I thought about that too, but I like to keep the stock parts for the car. I don't know why Porsche didn't put these things on the begin with. It make driving the car a lot more fun to drive. Now if I could just find something like this for the clutch pedal!

i always see positive comments for the throttle cam. i had one for a little while, and just couldn't drive as smoothly with it, so i put the stock one back on. that said, i might try it again, seeing as how i still have it. the 951 throttle cam is a 90 degree quarter circle (with a much smaller diameter), which is pretty much 'upgraded' in stock form. i did question as to why they didn't do the same on the 944 to begin with. it could have had to do with fuel consumption, as the 944 [engine] was being designed during the end part of the oil crisis.

Good point about the fuel consumption Mike. I had to make a handful of very small adjustments to mine to get it run smoothly to it going back to 900 RPM at idle. Not a big deal and it was still a quick process. I have an n/a, not a 951. I am guessing that your setup is a little different than mine as it was clearly stated that this throttle cam is ONLY for the 924 and 944 with out turbo (whatever years it applied to).

Right, i was talking about putting it on my 944, and simply noting the difference between the 944 and 951. also, i was noting that the 951 pretty much came with a quick response throttle cam.

I found I drove smoother with the throttle cam as I didn't drive the car more than a month before switching to 1:1 ratio cam. So it was more what I was used to driving when it was 1:1. If you drove the car a long time on the stock throttle cam I could see adjusting to the 1:1 ratio as being a big issue as I had a hard time with shifts and such with the stock throttle cam.

Is there anyway to shorten the clutch pedal? It would be nice if it was about half the distance to push it down to shift.

it is possible i didn't give myself enough time to adjust. it seemed to me that the old cam style was designed to really make shifts buttery smooth, but i'm beginning to think that my clutch center was on its way out, causing the shifts to be *****ty if i didn't do it *JUST* right.

When my clutch center was on it's way out my car bucked in 2nd gear like crazy. It was horriable.

Yeah, my clutch center too LOL. kinda a common 944 disease. Put a post up if you find any good cheap clutches. Runs in my mind I came across a good price on centerforce clutches somewhere on the net and now I can't find it.
Cheers

my buddy was experimenting with a ford aerostar clutch *LESS THAN $60* but something about the splined bit being too thick (front to rear dimensions). that could be fixed with a grinder and some patience, but i haven't seen them side to side to compare them, so don't know what it would take. he hasn't completed it as he has a 951 and ninja 250R to drive while he fixes his N/A. that'll work for the clutch plate, but the other hardware will still be expensive... food for thought though. my car now has a spring centered clutch so it should last quite a while.

Anyone have a diagram for this mod and will it work on an automatic/problems?

The clutch or the throttle cam? I am guessing the throttle cam.
The throttle cam will work on an auto. No real diagram needed. The stock throttle cam is round with an "arm" extending off of it and sits on top of your throttle body next you the air filter box. The new throttle cam is round without the arm giving you a quicker response. And some people like the cool colors they come in. So far I have only seen red, but it is the only red piece under my hood. So it LOOKS important... lol...It was a very nice and noticeable difference for me. From what I hear about the autos it should be a good improvement as a lot of people complain that the autos can be a dog. Are you thinking of getting one?

the throttle cam will NOT work on an auto without modification. the auto throttle cable is different and there is no provision for that in the upgrade throttle cam. that said, i'm sure there is some way to get one to work, but it would require modification of the cam itself, and more re-adjustment.
anything is possible, but the cam does not come ready to bolt onto an automatic, and even if you did, it would still be more of a dog than the manual, sorry to say! someone on here might have already done the mod though... i'd be interested to hear how it works out, i had an auto and never thought of doing the throttle cam mod

Sorry hpaulb! When I ordered it the short description didn't say anything about the transmission only not for turbo and only for 8V. I did go back and look it up again. They have a longer write up about this cam and it does say for manual trans only.
Maybe there is one out there somewhere for the auto. Let us know if you find anything!
