Was there ever a 944E built?

I was driving down the freeway on friday and looked in the rear view mirror and a car in the left lane that looked like a 924, as he started to pass me I could see thats what it was, a cream colored 924 that had the vented nose panel and the turbo hood. As he got ahead of me I looked at the emblem on the back and it said "944E". I know I read the 944 right but could have been mistaken about the "E". Nontheless I know it wasnt a 944 because of the obvious differences in the bodies of the 924 and 944, but was there ever a 944E built?

I guess at the local autozone all the "Type R" and "Type S" placards were taken...

The 944E was the rare 5-cylinder version, sold only in Elbownia.

Impossible to place a value on it, as there is no conversion between US and Elbownian currency.

Was it a 944S? I can see how somebody would get those two letters confused while driving...

Could have been, but it was a 924 body. Didnt have the wide body the 944's do.

The puddin head that got the car probably got it without the rear emblem that said 924. They then seen a 944 emblem and assumed that it was waht they were missing. Or maybe there was some prototype 944 that we never heard about. One never knows what they may find.
