Temp switch question

After getting my 85.5 944 on the road recently, I noticed my rad fans weren't working and I was overheating. After searching this site to find out where my temp switch was (the Haynes manual showed a weird image angle that looked like the bottom of the rad instead of the drivers side), I took off the wiring harness and jumpered the 3 posts in random fashion (even all 3 together) until I got the passenger side to spin, but I couldn't get the driver's side going. I assume the switch is bad and needs to be replaced, my question is why I couldn't get the driver's side going? I have checked to see if the fan is functional by pulling the wires off the passenger's side and putting it on the driver's. I sprayed the connector with contact cleaner and still nothing when I put the fan harnesses back to normal and jumpered wires, do they run independant of each other (logic says no, but I just want to be sure).

I'm not an expert on this but I beleive the temp sensor controls one of the fans and the A/C controls the other. Maybe that's why only one fan went on.

I think you're right Tidybuoy, thank you. I did some checking on Clark's and found a relay troubleshooting guide. It said both fans would spin when I low-speed jumpered it, but only one came on with the key off, but my mechanic told me it might be the same thing you said. With the the key on and jumpered for high speed spin, both worked. That guide might be for an early model 944 that works differently.
