won't start after clutch change
 

I just changed the clutch on my 87 944S, and it was a nightmare. I put it all back together, finally, and it won't start. It turns over just fine, but won't start. The S models have no sensors in the clutch housing so I just don't understand. Any ideas?
One other thing...the cables going to the starter. A big one from the battery, on the big terrminal, and a little red wire onto the solenoid terminal. BUt there is a third cable, bigger than the solenoid wire but smaller than the positive cable, running in the same loom as the solenoid wire. I put it on the same terminal on the starter as the positive cable; there doesn't seem to be anywhere else for it to go....believe it or not, my factory service manual doesn't show anywhere where the cables run. Could that be the problem?

Of course, the S models do have a sensor in the bell housing. Find it, install it properly, and you might have a chance of getting it to run.

+1 on the S having a sensor on the bell housing.

Three sizes of wires to the starter, large from the battery, medium from the alternator goes to the same large lug as the one from the battery and small goes to the remaining connector.

And ditto the S models do have ONE sensor. Adjusts to the same 0.8mm.

Clutch jobs are a pain. Never known one to be a nightmare.

Hook up your speed/reference sensor and it should run.

I have a service manual for the standard model and it illustrated sensors at the top of the housing, in a virtually impossible-to-reach place. My car did not have them; I assumed that it relied on the Hall sensor behind the distributor. WHERE is the mysterious speed sensor located on the S model? I didn't see it when I took it apart....

Let me guess, you have a haynes manual. Worse than not having any manual at all.

Look at the clarks garage shop manual online.

You should see your sensors on the back of the engine, near the firewall on the top of the bellhousing. Or at least if you're missing them it's where the bracket should be.
