Optima batteries

Anyone ever put an Optima battery in their 944? If so what size did you use? I need a new battery for my S2 cab and like the idea of a fully sealed battery.

The red top is the best one for the 944. They're all the same size, but the others are overkill in terms of deep cycle, CCA's etc. Plus, the blue-top has some extra posts that get in the way.

They're kind of a bugger to make fit. I had to relocate the vacuum bulb, line the tray with a protective sheet of ABS plastic, fabricate a hold-down and use one of those ground quick-disconnects to relocate the negative post. Pics below.

I did a similar thing as above. I diddn't relocate the vacuum canister, but if you ever have to jump it/from it, the posts are a pain to access. On the bright side, the only time I killed it was when I left my parking lights on for 14 hours.

What's all that zinc-based looking paint you put in the battery well? Some sort of highly basic-based paint?

That was just some rattle can paint I had laying around. I had just finished patching a rust hole there and needed to cover it with something. It was mainly a track car so I didn't care if it matched.

I like that modified tie strap for the battery. My battery is just laying there with no tie down. In the middle picture i'm assuming that's a bolt thread sticking out of the battery mount so you can then bolt that down to the battery tie strap?

After looking into the Optimas, I decided to go with the much lighter and smaller Hawker Odyssey PC680MJT.
It weighs around 14lbs, and has plenty of power to crank over our S2000 (which is 11:1 compression). If we were going to need Winter cold cranking power, we might have gone with the larger PC925....but our toy cars skip the nasty Michigan weather months.

mmm sounds good. I wonder if there is a calcium based paint. That way, the paint cold form an anti-acidic barrier.

Yes, that is correct. It' kinda hard to reach, and could stand to be a little bigger but that's all that space would allow.

Optima fits perfectly!

Don't see why you needed to futz around with the Optima on it's side and all that...

Mine just "fell" right into place!

I did shim up the rear side of the outide hold down clamp to make sure it stayed put, but that was it!

Phot s/b attached...

That would be the Model 8020-164 SC35R

But don't tell Optima that it's going into a Porsche!!! The will throw a fit and not sell it to you!

Why? I have no idea... guess they don't like Porsches!

Did you pull the "Spacer" off the bottom of the Optima? I think that drops it down like 5/8ths of an inch...

Of course, you still need to insulate the Positive terminal in case you bounce around some! I used a piece of 1/8" Rubber Gasket material, cut to fit over the Terminal, and secured with a zip tie... Perfect!

Roger that, bro.. I've heard horror stories of what happens when the positive cable shorts out. Bad things. Bad things.

i had a battery that was just tall enough to touch the hood (had a rubber mat on top just to be sure) during hard cornering.... it shorted out many times, and I guess I was lucky.. I never experienced anything more than a dead battery that needed to be charged after every short out...

I have some rubber covers that go on under the battery connector then come up and cover the top of the terminal.

I sold a 951 wiring harness to a guy whose harness got destroyed due to a short. It was a freak occurrence: he ran over a lit highway flare, which got lodged by the starter and burned through the positive cable, causing it to short circuit on the firewall. Current shot through everything and burned the entire harness. Granted the short didn't occur at the battery post, but it seems like the same thing could happen no matter where a short like that occurs.
