SAFETY ISSUE: Fuel hose from fuel damper to fuel rail

When I had my fuel rail apart putting in new fuel injectors I noticed that the fuel hose from the fuel damper to the fuel rail was pretty dried out and had a decent bubble in it.

I went to a local shop and had them make me a new high pressure hose. The hose on here is about $100. They made mine for $30 and I got it same day.

Check that hose if you have it apart! All the damage was on the underside of the hose and not at all visible till it was apart. BEWARE! The top side of the hose looked perfect. With the age of these cars and the high temp area of the hose in the engine compartment I would advise anyone with the extra time to take their's apart and check it. It really is worth the hour to check it to avoid disaster of a fire or an explosion.

Hopefully this post will help advert potential problems.

What local shop did it for $30? Are you related to the owner? The best price I could find anywhere for metric (hey, it's a metric car) push-on fittings alone was $22. EACH. Do you have part numbers for the fittings and the hose? Are the fittings crimp-on, push-on or the reusable type? I ask all this because I've done a ton of research on replacing ALL my fuel lines and it looks like the best bang for my buck would be Parker 82 Series Push-Lok X metric threaded fittings, Push-Lok X EO-2 metric tube bite fittings and Aeroquip FC332 Socketless fuel hoze. $200 for zinc-chromate plated steel fittings from the tank through the fuel rail and back to the tank. That includes EO-2 bite fittings on the FPR return nipple and fuel tank return nipple as well.

probably not because carquest/federated, if they have a hose shop, use the old fittings/crimpons and you can be out the door for $30.

it's probably why the pricing is about the same.

i got a real one a year ago for $65.

he wasn't replacing all the lines, just the one.

I thought crimp-on fittings were permanent, meaning they couldn't be reused. How on earth do you "un-crimp" a fitting? I would be very leary of reusing one of those.

All I know for sure is that they gave me a 300 PSI hose with a heat rating of 275 degrees. They knew where it was going and what I was doing with it. They are a local shop that does a lot of hydraulic lines, belts and hoses. All they do there is custom work.

I am not a high pressure hose guy and they wrote exactly what the hose was for on my receipt. They also had a handful of people in the shop look at it. I doubt they would give me something unsafe as it would be a decent lawsuit if there was a problem. But who knows, maybe the one time I went cheap, thinking I was getting something better, really is a ticking time bomb.

I think the hose on here was around $100. I thought that was a little expensive for 6 inches of hose. I check the hose often, so far so good. No leaks, no problems. And yes, I like buying the new stuff.

Please let me know of your thoughts on this new hose of mine. One thing I do know is that it is better than what was on there.

This is a safety recall by Porsche. If it hasn't been done yet, your Porsche dealer will still do it for free.

Lots of good stuff on this thread linked below. i plan on installing Vic's kit (Pauer Tuning) but working with the fuel lines just doesnt spell fun to me. FOR NOW, im using the rennbay kit...

SoCal was pretty staunch on recommending only using connections similar to the factory type as you can see by his posts, however there is no Porsche dealer near me, and getting that kind of set up locally would be a big PITA for me.

I think the Lindsey kit, and preferably Pauer Tuning kit are on the money...

fuel line replacement...

My local Porsche dealer looked at me like I was on crack when I asked about this recall and denied any knowledge of it. Not sure if the '87s were subject to it or not, but I replaced it anyway since it was looking rough.

Any idea what they replaced it with? A steel line would be best I would think. Or a hose that was not so close to the cam housing and all that heat. Even an inch of space would make a huge difference. I will keep a real close eye on the line I have now and will get it replaced with a better solution.

I am sure I will get the same reaction out of my local Porsche dealer.

They are calling the fuel damper the FPR in this recall. I'm sure it's the correct recall though. Are these types of recalls good forever? I wonder if the dealer has to install it or if they would just give me the part. I would guess they would have to install it for legal reasons.

I would also think that they can look up the VIN Numbers to verify if it has been replaced on my car or not.

Hi, any idea if the recall would cover 87 924S cars as well?

I was under the impression that the recall covered 944's only and not the 924S's. We need to look at an official recall notice, not some unofficial web site for this info.

Oh and John, got a picture(s) of the new hose installed?

It covers both 944 and 924S cars.

You could look it up in the NHTSA database. (try google)
