opening tranny?

I need some tips when it comes to opening a 84 944 tranny. it finally gave up about 2 weeks ago. Me and my dad replaced the tranny with another we bought from the junk yard. what i would like to do is open up the tranny and see what happened inside. Anyone ever open the tranny up?

thanks.

Start from the rear. The round 3" rubber coated seal has a hole in the center, you can punch a screwdriver in and deform/remove the seal...(no way to save it, don't bother trying, $12 for replacment)

You will need an impact wrench to remove the nut under this seal. Then remove the bolts around the rear section. Pry the rear section up/off, and be warned that the ball bearings behind the nut you just removed may fall out as the housing is pulled away.

At this point you are looking at the fifth gears, and should be able to see what to remove next, ie. pins holding shift levers, snap rings holding gears...etc.

good luck

JM

Its kinda fun and easy to take it apart just to inspect what failed. It will take you a few hours if you intend to take the gears off the shafts (some parts involve baking the gears/shaft in an oven for 45 minutes). However, its not easy if you intend to put it together.
