headlight weights
ok lightening up the track car..heres the diet, but have some questions.. Since its a stock 83 motor, about all i can do it put it on a diet.
first..how much do the headlights and motors weigh? worth removing? (ill put in a solid panel instead) Interior Carpet and all Inside trim and soundproofing AC system Front and rear bumpers replaced with fiber Stock seats replacing with momo seats radio stuff and attenna rear hatch replace with lexan (pretty cheap for the reduction) power window motors... not sure how im gonna work this..maybe replace with lexan and a strap? Whats left? replace with lighter exhaust muffler? Remove the cat? This is not a race car..just a fun project for track says for me. Thanks Dave

not sure what any of it weighs... but here's what you could do...
drop the power steering if you've got it.. switch to a manual rack... you could drop a few pounds switching to a smaller, lighter battery. switching to fuch wheels will make your wheels spin up quicker, and shed a ton of poundage. remove the rear seats dont just stop at fiberglass bumpers, the more body panels you do, the better. buy a treadmill.... to shed some pounds yourself! :P remove passenger seat entirely during race day. lexan/plexi windshield? not sure if one of these are even made...

These cars can get down to 2400 lbs or less (400 lb reduction) without much at all. The carpeting and sound deadening weighs in at over 100#. Ditch the entire HVAC system including heat and AC and blower. The headlight motor and lifter bar are great to remove and if lights are required you can manually rig them up, otherwise remove them too. You can gut the doors (best if you have a cage) and remove the window motors and everything. Best part is that you can leave the tracks and the glass and still have windows that you can remove. The seats also weight a lot and race seats are much lighter. Just removing weight dosent cost you anything and drops the weight significantly. The money you save can go into suspension. When driven well you can keep up with turbos (911TT as well) in everything but the straits.
I would avoid fiberglass and lexan until you have done everything else. The cost and maintinence is more than its worth until absolutly necessary. Then the hatch and the hood are good places to start, as well as the 30lb bumpers. Remember that you want the weight to be equal front to rear and also you want to remove the most weight from the ends of the car and the top of the car. Having fun is the most important part! Show 'em what 944's can do. -Greg
