installing volt meter

What's the easiest way to install an after market volt meter for an 84 944. Directly to alternator?
Thanks

I would find the circuit from the ignition switch. That way it will read when the switch is on. Any circuit will work. Even the radio power.

I am about to re-wire my voltmeter to the ignition switch "SU" terminal (should be the same on your '84 944). The voltmeter becomes active with the key inserted and in any position. The other side of this switched wire goes directly to the battery so it should give the most accurate battery voltage reading. It's a red/black stripe wire about 18 Gauge in size. Also equally important for an accurate volltage reading is a good voltmeter GROUND connection. I am using the factory ground pad behind the right side of the glovebox on the inner firewall under the dashboard.
