944 Not starting when warm? HELP?
OK, I just got my 86 944 Last week. Not too bad so far, this is all new to me. I just rebuilt a 73 International Scout 2, so going from that to this is 180 degrees! Here is my question:
I can drive the car around, turn it off and try to restart, and it won't start up. I have to let it sit 4-10 mins, depending on temp, before it will start. Turns over good, doesn't seam like it is getting fire. I have good fuel pressure, due to draining the tank, so I know I have good pressure to the rails, Filter is not dirty, and have good battery and connections. Any suggestions, Please LMK. Thanks Mike |
What is the fuel pressure on the rail? Should be around 40 PSI. Could be a DME or a DME relay issue. Are you getting spark when it's hot and not starting?
Try these links. All good info! www.clarks-garage.com http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq08.html The 944 and 924 engines are the same. |
Sounds like the regulator is not returning the fuel to the tank leaving the rail flooded building the pressure. Once it sits the fuel drops to a normal pressure and allows the injectors to fire. This a best guess as I had the same issue, changed the FPR and solved it.
And to clarify engines....early 924 is NOT the same engine and you will read on warmup regulator or cold start valves. 944na/924s does not have these 2. Be mindful of this when reading the "connact" FAQ's. Dal |
Sorry, I was told in other posts that they are the same engine and that's why they have them in the same message board. My fault!

Not your fault at all, you did good, as both are listed just need to verify it is not referring to the early engine as does in the Connact FAQ's. I can bet he would question where the warmup reg is and we do not have one, based on if he read the FAQ's and missed it refers to a 77-81 924.:) Has both just need to be sure the right one is read.

Thanks for the correction. :)

Thanks for the Help so far guys! Well. I Changed the plugs yesterday and the Gap was way ou, looks like someone just put them in. It ran a little better just due to that. I checked the DME Relay, and that is good. I pulled the Fuel Rail off toady and got 4 new seal kits, the injector O-Rings were cracked, hard and shrunk. The end caps for the injectors were all cracked, so hopefully that will help out as well. I am installing the new Idle control valve as well, figured I had the rail off and I would replace that as well. Kind of a pain, but did not have to remove the intake manifold. The hoses were cracked as well. Hopefully with this it will work, if not, then I will go another step! Thanks Mike

Sounds good so far.

I had the identical problem and the identical solution as 924Sman.
