944S Value
I am interested to know what you all think the value of my 944S is and where the best place to list it for sale. I do not want to sell it to some high school kid who will crash it or call me every two weeks when the fuel gage will not read correctly or the seat motor breaks.
87 944S with 70K original miles. 5 spd, black on black. Mint inside, needs paint outside to be perfect and a good tune up. Has new brakes, timing belt, injectors, water pump, fuel pump, tires etc etc. Needs a bit of TLC, but I have done a lot of it already to bring this good car back to life. I sold my 86 911 when the baby was born, got a 944S to compensate, and now have the opportunity to get a 97 911 CS4 and the 944 has to go. I do not know that much about them and just want to know what it is worth. Thanks. JD 87 944S |
Do you have any pics??? Good interrior is a good start. Did you change the chain tenioner for the cam? If you did then that would be important to note. I think it's a $400 part. Can a good buff job bring back the paint? What's wrong with it that it needs a "good tune up?" Everyone's idea of a tune up is different.
|
If the exterior paint is okay and the interior is mint, and the car only needs a tune-up to be mechanically perfect, I don't see why $5000 wouldn't be a reasonable listing price. Let's see some pics, though, before we decide for sure.

I saw a few in canada for a good 5-9 grand... recently..
some crappy looking ones for less |
Thanks for the responses. The chain tensioner was changed with the timing belt.
The paint has alot of rock chips on the nose and some spyder cracking on the hood. The rear drivers quarter panel has a bit of rot as well. It got stone chipped and was not protected. My body guys as $300 to fabricate the new piece and that he would do it when the whole car is painted. The rest of the paint would come back easily with a compound and buff. I am not sure what I mean by good tune up, but I think it it needs plugs and cooling flush. That has not been done in a while. It starts rough, but is great once it has run for 2 minutes. I will upload pictures later when I get a chance. |
First impressions are going to be important in this case. The body is okay but if it also runs rough its going to be a tougher sell. Given the low cost of plugs and coolant I would put that high on the priority list of things to do. All the other maintenance will be good selling points but you loose credibility if it runs rough.

A few hundred dollars for a "decent" quick panit job and body work will get you an easy extra $1K to $1500.
Try cleaning the throttle body and put the highest octane gas in you have. Change the plugs. That might get you out of a rough start. There is also an Idle Valve or a vac hose that may need some attention for the rought start till it's warm. Wires, cap and rotor would be good too. Maybe the fuel injectors need to be cleanded up. Someone in recent posts had some good stuff to use to clean them. Spending an extra $500 on all this stuff can get you an extra $2K towards the final sale. That's my opinion. :) |
Very true icey.. good points...
but ... one thing to debate... My cousin works for esso... higher up guy... said that apparently there is no beneficial difference in 91-94 octane fuel... some tech thing he explained with additives and such that negates the ability for the extra octane rating to even work...places are not selling 94 now because of that... some are... as a cash grab... but at the end of the day.. 91... if needed more... put the octane boost stuff in it... i would guess... |

dude dont put a ****ty paint job on a 944, it will look awful, using a flat color, thats gonna start chipping and fade off ina few months.
|
maybe icey is talkng about doing your own paintjob, because with a good quality paint gun, and buying your own paint, primer, and thinner, and materials, you can put a very very nice quality paint job. and its not hard to do. just take your time.
but since your selling the car anyway i doubt you will see a big enough profit from painting the car, its not worth your time or money unless your keeping it |
Rollers... Use rollers... you should see my bedroom.. looks amaazing!!!
:) LOL |
Maybe I misread, but I thought he knew someone that was going to help him with the body work. Just assumed he could paint too. Sid painted his car for the cost of paint and I'm sure it looks a lot better than what he has now.
I wouldn't touch a car that needs paint. Even if the paint is not perfect it's better than junk and rust. Who drives a Porsche with a total junk paint job anyway? If you are then maybe you are in the wrong class of cars unless it's a track car. The extra additives in the gas have to do something. Maybe clean a car that's been neglected? But then again I don't buy cars in that condition nor would I drive one like that. The way I look at a car is that if they couldn't even keep the paint decent by washing and waxing the car then the rest of it MUST be junk. Maybe it's been left laying outside for years untouched. Who knows... got any pics yet???? |
my 944S has a sticker that says "95RON"
as far as i know, there were no detuned 944S'es for the US which means it will have it's knock sensor change the ignition timing if it get's less then 95 Octane Porsche Workshop Manual specifies it needs http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184962541.jpg i would think, that it can use the higher octane, since either way, it has adapting Motronic, with knock sensor controlled ignition... |
I use premium in my S but I always used regular in the na. As for the price, being an "S"model that is far superior to any other 944 I suggest a price of

I am not shure what are the diferences between us and eu gas, but I allways use 100 octane gas in mine, and it runs as smooth as a straight six

some countries have fuel stations selling 91 , some even 100 , but those are rare, and you can't assume you'll find such a fuel station while doign a road trip in the EU... 95 and 98 however are EU wide another difference is that it costs a heck of a lot more on a side note, if i put 98 in mine, it runs like crap, bucks when pulling high revs high load... on 95 it runs perfect.. not sure what causes it, as it should run just as well on 98 ... i suspect it has some thing to do with additives, 98 in EU these days is special gas, (Shell V-power, and others) with additives to clean the engine and have beter milage ... regular 98 without additives, are hard to come by, and there have been reports of injector problems from those high end fuels |
here in slovenia, 98 and 100 octane gas has the same price(€1.2/liter). Mine doesn`t like 95 at all, runs fine on 98 but preferes 100.
100 makes my n/a idle really smooth, so I decided that I`ll only use 100 since arround 50% gas stations has it and I would pay the same if I`d use 98.. I think it makes it rev a bit faster too, but it could be only my imagination :D |
but is yours a 944S? or an 8 valve 944?, those have to have 98
