interior fan problem
i am sure this has been covered, but i am feeling too lazy to search.
when i turn the fan on inside the car, only position four works. i tapped on the relay, not very scientific for sure, but it made no difference. is it the mysterious 'resistor block' or something else? this only started yesterday in some serious heat, 100F at least, at an autocross. TIA, darell

Sounds like the resistor block under the plastic cover. There is no resistance needed with the fans on position 4, so it bypasses the resistors completely. Clean what you can with a pencil eraser and contact cleaner, should be fine afterwards.

It covers the fan blower unit and the wiper motor. Basically you need to pull the rubber seal that slides on the edge of the firewall off and you can lift the cover up. I dont remember exactly but i think you need to remove the wiper arms (easy to do, one nut) to get it off completely. I am fairly certain you can reach the resistor pack without having to completely remove the plastic cover.

now it works again, without working on it. i think it was partly the heat that day, 105F at the autocross. the idle also started to wander a little, which it stopped doing after i drove it home. apparently the electrical stuff didn't like the extreme heat.

There's a ~1" x ~6" bump in the plastic cover, in about 18" from the left - the resistors are under there. I cut the cover with a utility knife (basically cut the bump off on three sides and hinged it upon the fourth side toward the front of the car). The resistors pull out - two screws. Then I stuck toothpicks in the contacts and soaked the whole thing in vineger for a few hours. Then washed with simple green, then water. Put it back together, taped the hinged cover back down with black duct tape and it works great. Not real happy with the tape but I coldn't face pulling that cover. Can't really see it, but I know...
