the black box

There's this black box behind the glove compartment that makes a buzzing sound with the ac off. I took it out earlier but never got a part number, il try to get it today. But does anyone have any idea on what that thing is? Because of that my heat doesn't work anymore so I'm trying to find another one. If anyone has any information on where I can possibly get a new or used one please let me know!

Thanks

part number is 477959531. known as some sort of a booster.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/PartsLookup/search.cgi?command=show_page&Catalog_Name=944_USA_82_85_KATALOG&Illustration=813-00&Line_Item=7

thats the link for it. Might not be for an 86 unfortunately...maybe it is so if you wouldn't mind taking a quick look I would appreciate it.

Awesome, thanks vancity944. I appreciate it. If you do have it and its in good shape (im sure it is) how much would you sell it for?

Thanks Dal, makes a lot more sense now, a couple days ago I was like what the hell is this thing?! seemed to big for a relay but I was wrong. Whats the deal with that little red adjuster thing? says like hot or cool on it or something?

Well it is not the electrical relay as that is a separate relay and much smaller and grey in color(iirc?)
Red switch... It adjusts pressure in the AC system. Not so much "boost" as stated but pressure regulation of the compressor.

The moral is it controls the AC output by pressure which in turn regulates cooling(hot/cold) so to speak.

Well, not exactly. It's a control unit for keeping the evaporator from freezing up. Underneath the clear plastic tape, there is a pot that can be adjusted for warmer (H) or colder (C). If it gets too cold, and is in danger of freezing, it will shut off the compressor. Roughly, it should be adjusted for about 36 degrees F.

I dont know what its worth but it probably would have gone to the wreckers anyway. I will just double check to make sure it works for you.

Sure thing vancity, I'll try to get you a pic of it tomorrow, i have one on my phone but im not sure how to send it to my cpu, my brother knows so i will ask him. The quality isn't digital camera like but it should be good enough to describe its location. Without the pic here's a brief description, up and to the right of the thing that sucks up the air from inside the cabin. I'll do a quick edit with some lines on where the stuff is, i wana make it as easy for you as possible cuz what you're doing is very awesome of you.

That is the A/C amplifier. If it goes bad, you will get no juice to your compressor. Mine went bad, it had a burnt trace, easy fix.
