balance shaft alignment
How do I align the balance shafts. All belts are off the car and the balance shafts were rotated, on accident. Supid me, I didn't mark the belt or rollers.
I don't see any marks on the engine or the rollers to realign the shafts. How do I know where to position them when I put the belts back on.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't think about checking his website, even though I have his tool.
What problems are caused by the balance shafts? And why would you want to remove them?

Removing them will result in less drag on the engine and free up HP. The downside is increased engine vibration. Ive never driven one without balance shafts, but ive heard from those who have taken them out that they noticed not much of a difference in vibration. Thats probably because they have good engine mounts. I figure with worn out engine mounts and no balance shafts, you run the chance of cracking the oil pickup tube.

Techno, it does vibrate with bad mounts and no balance shafts. My car was like that when I bought it, I made sure to put a new belt on them and get them goin again. They helped. As for the balance shafts, be sure if you took the pulleys off for anything that they are aligned correctly with the woodruff key. I know to check them, but got in a hurry putting my car together a few weeks ago and messed them up. It had more vibration than with out balance shafts. Needless to say I fixed it. Just giving you the heads up. Also if you have an old belt and need to remove the pulleys, it may not be kosher, but I put an old belt around the crank pulley and the pulley I was removing and the put vise-grips on the belt so it was tight. Then I put the car in 5th gear, that way it holds the engine the best it can through the clutch. Then I could break the bolt loose. This gets you around the spanner wrench for thoses things. Just remember you can only use as much toque as your clutch will hold. Well, nuff rambling. Good luck.

also be carefull when looking at these b/c the early motors were marked differently than the later causing a lot of problems setting them up about 180 out.
I had ran into this myself but it's been awhile and I can't quite remeber how the markings were. UBER and OBER but one was mis marked from the factory I think clarkes has some good info on it
