PowerProm 2 or Lambda???

I am purchasing a Wilks chip today.
i have a 1987 924S
what do you think i should, the PP2 or the Lambda
Wilks said i have to choose between those 2
i want to be able to feel the performace difference, and not damage my car, those are the two things i care about
i have no clue about oxygen sensors, so that's y im leaning toward the PP2, because of all the good reviews. however the lambda is new

any input would be great

thanks

I recently ordered the PP2 for my '87 924S, and am still waiting for it to arrive. I chose this model for several reasons. First, since it can ignore the O2 sensor, that is one more part on the car that can fail and have no consequence to driveability. By ignoring the O2 sensor this will slightly increase response time, even if by a few ms, since there are no calculations involved in finding the injector duty. I also frequently track my car (several times a month) so I was looking for a pure performance boost. Since the PP2 carries both the stock (lambda) map and the performance map, I do not see the target market for the lambda chip. If you need to pass emissions, or get better fuel economy, switch the stock map, if you want power and performance, switch the performance map. Just my 2 cents, I eagerly await the arrival of my chip to test it. :)

thank you im goin for the PP2

I bought the PP2 with the switch for stock with the shudder fix. I can not tell you how much of an improvement the PP2 is. I only switch back to the stock setting with shudder fix for long highway drives, where the fuel economy is an issue. Both settings are a great improvement over stock.

wow i really cant wait, i bought it a couple hours ago, paid him extra to over night it, im pumped, so the pp2 is safe on the highway right? just bad on gas mileage

Eldorado 08-08-2007 07:06 PM

it's not *bad* on gas... I dont notice much more than a couple mpg difference..

most of the bad gas mileage, in my opinion, comes from a heavier foot because the car is a lot more fun to drive ;)
if you drive with a conservative foot, you wont notice much, if any, difference in mileage....

but if you drive with a conservative foot, why get a chip at all? ;)

THey do not sell to modified 84's with the 86 dme & afs. It doesn't work. I was thinking of doing it. The harnesses are too different and the power prom 2 does not work. Now, the new PP-Lambda works in a modified 84's and no need to move connector pins around. :D

richard,
i have a 1983 with a 1987 airflow and dme. i am using a Weltmeister chip made for that dme. i felt an IMMEDIATE change and extra zoom. why won't the PP2 work the same way?

My 2 cents:

I chose the Lambda version for my '87 944 and I'm very happy with it (thanks FR!). After reading about the differences I figured using the latest version of the chip made sense. I liked the idea of having performance tuning when needed and passing emissions testing when at idle. The original version may do this too, but I figured the latest version was the better way to go.

i went with the PP2, and FR Wilk said it was a good choice, this is what he told me about the lamda and the PP2

FYI

The Lambda series chip is like the Autothority, Weltmeister, etc. etc. and
all others. We modify the stock part of the chip only. The PowerPROM@ is
unique in that I leave the stock part of the chip alone. I modify the Euro
part of the chip. This is how I get the dual chip. No one else does this. It
is my little trick. Both chips have the same wide open performance. I hope
this helps.

This makes me curious about a free and simple way to improve a US 944/924S. I would try this on my car, but the engine is in a dozen pieces right now. If someone with a stock chip would like to try this, I would be very interested in the results.

#1. Test the car in the midrange (2500 - 4000 rpm) using mid to moderate throttle, do not use WOT.
#2. Disconnect the altitude sensor and short the 2 pins out. On my 924S it was located to the right of the DME, drivers side.
#3. Retest the car using the same conditions.

I would assume that the US cars would notice a slight improvement over the midrange, and that the DME would be ignoring the lambda sensors. Any feedback on this test would be greatly appreciated.

From what I can gather, the PP2 Lambda works like this:

"Stock" Mode - uses stock maps, lambda sensor AND includes the shudder fix.
"Sport" Mode - uses improved maps, shudder fix BUT ignores the lambda sensor.

That is exactly what I am looking for the PP2 Lambda to do.

Is this a correct assumption??

PP2 is what you want. PP Lambda is something else.

I wouldn't. Youl burn your valves. It will lean out the engine since it thinks it is at 5000 ft?

Based on dw215's post about the Euro/US fuel maps, I think the altitude switch should change the fuel mode from the US map to the Euro map. This is just a guess I have, I suppose it is possible that it goes from a richer to a leaner mix. I will have to try this with my car when it is put back together. Lucky I have an exhaust sniffer, I will post my results when done.
