1986 951 Sunroof not working, help?

1986 951 Sunroof not working, help?

About a year or two ago, I had the car repaired at an auto body shop. Just before they finished, there was a heavy rain that caused major flooding in the areas. Apparently, the body shop left the windows open during part of that rain and water came into the car.

The body shop stripped everything out and completely dried the car out and put it back in shape.

Shortly thereafter, the power sunroof stopped working properly. Though I could never determine if this was caused by the rain water.

My mechanic looked at this problem and recommended I leave it alone due to probable very high costs to repair, plus I would need to find someone with experience to do the repair.

Apparently, there is still some response from the electrical mechanism allowing us to open or lock the roof.

1. Has anyone had this problem?

2. What did you do? What were the costs?

3. Does the whole system need to be replaced? ( I don’t think this is just the plastic “gear” issue)

4. What more info would you need to give me proper advice?

5. Where else should I go to get opinions and costs for repair of this?

Thanks all, again.

What do you mean by open or lock the roof?
If it worked before, i would first check the open/close switch. Then check the limit switches. I think that there are 3 or 4.

I've just been through this. The '86 does not have plastic gears, it has a completely different system. In my case, one of the brass tubes that holds the toothed cable that pushes up the sunroof broke away from its bracket.

I pulled the motor and lift mechanism and replaced it with manual latches.

If you think the problem might be the motor itself, I now have a spare one...

Legion...question about manual latches

Is there a way for me to manually tilt up the sunroof, lock it in that position for fresh air venting, and then manually close and lock the roof?

If so, I'm much rather forget about the motor and just do it that way.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, but you have to buy the manual latches.

bobp53916 offered me a pair. WTB: Manual Sunroof Latches

Try contacting him. I can also recomend 944 Ecology. The new ones run $100 apiece.
