T'Stat and Fan Switch in 924S

My 924S and I are currently in Alicante, Spain, where the temp last week was 38C...bit cooler this week.

I also live in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it is much cooler...about 18C to-day.

I recently bought a new Radiator, T'Stat and Fan Switch in Scotland (easier and cheaper there) and had them fitted to the 924S here in Spain.

The T'Stat and Fan Switch are standard in cool Scotland...T'Stat is 85C...Fan Switch goes on at a temperature quite close to the T'Stat.

I now find the Radiator fan running a lot...it comes on very fast (temperatures are much higher in Spain) and tends to stay on.....the Temp needle doesn't move much.

It is like the T'Stat and Fan Switch are so close they are fighting each other here in Spain.

In a hot State like Florida what would be the best T'Stat temperature and what would be the best Fan Switch temperature-range to minimise the use of the radiator fan?

Never any peace with a Porsche.....Saludos..........GraemeB

It sounds to me that your system is working properly. The fan switch is running as it should and your thermostat opens when it reaches an optimal range (hot).

GraemeB, Welcome.
I am using the 75 degree C (167 F) 2 prong fan switch. I am also using the 80 degree C (176 F) thermostat. I have found that this combination will cause the fan to run less after engine shut off. I use 20-50 Castrol oil. The daily high temperatures in Phoenix have been between 38 to 43 degree C (100 to 110 F) and the car runs with temperature needle in center. Your fan switch and Tstat are a bit higher. Also check the battery, charging system and batt cables- both ends.

When I bought the 924S in Spain some years ago I am sure the needle was at 1/4 when driving and the fan came on at 3/4 and very quickly dropped the temp back to 1/4...I drove it back to Scotland for a couple of years and replaced the T/Stat etc with Brit stuff.

I feel I need a lower T/Stat (80?) with a regular fan switch... this might allow the temp to fluctuate more easily between normal running temp and fan assisted cooling....I am sure this was what I originally had in the 924S.

Many thanks for your interest.................saludos cordiales......................GraemeB

If thats what you want to do, keep in mind that you will need to flush your cooling system, replace the anti freeze (properly balanced 50/50 or appropriate to your climate) replace the thermo switch and thermostat ( with units that had the same temp values ) and properly "bleed" the system with the heater on. Additionally change out the radiator cap if it is old and check for any and all leaks. Run a pressure check on your system. Replacing all heater hoses is a good idea too.
Then, you might get similar readings as before.

Good Luck!
