I Discovered Something - I can be dumb sometimes.

All this talk about flashing the lights (on another post) got me thinking...I don't think my lights will flash when they are off. So, I checked and when the lights are off, if I try to flash them, the lights do indeed flash but nobody sees them as they are in the down position. That seemed kinda dumb to me.

So, today as I was driving to work and was behind a chrome fuel truck, I checked again and nothing...but then I decided to try and do it with the fog lights switched to off (since I always use them, the switch is always in the on position)..I switched them off and then tried the flash - it worked!

Maybe we all think the 911 crowd is snobbish when actually, they have been flashing all this time but they didn't know it wasn't working.....just a thought.

Lastly, I went on my first PCA club road trip this weekend - all 911's and me in my lowly 944. It was the most fun as we drove thru the mountains on a twisty road...we went about 90 miles and then breakfast - it was the fastest 90 miles I've driven in a long time. Chasing a group of 911's and keeping up was a lot of fun. Some photos below:

Any guesses which car is mine?

to confirm, headlights up or down with fog lights off? which lights flashed?

Tidybuoy 08-21-2007 04:57 PM

When my headlights are off (i.e., down) and fog light switch on - if I toggle the turnsignal/highbeam flasher - the headlights flash (but can't be seen). do this at night in the driveway to confirm.

Same as above but the fog light switch is "off" - when I toggle the flasher stalk, the foglights flash.

I'm glad I'm not an electrical engineer.

My 924S doesn't have foglights and will flash lights but they don't come up, they just flash inside the bonnet.

On my toyota, it's an '89, and when you pull back on the lever the lights flip up quick and flash and go back down, which is pretty cool....

For my 914, I purchased a special wiring setup that allowed me to flash the fogs in the daytime. I got this on e-Bay and it was pretty simple to install.

I have a 1974 914 - speaking of owners manuals, for the 914 it's almost comedy - those dang Germans.....The manual gives tips for rebuilding the transmission on the side of the road and states that if the gear lever is broken, a short broom stick can be made to work....lol

myskyon 08-21-2007 08:32 PM

ok thats i what i found out too. but on my new 87 951 my lights dont flash. just the fogs. the heads do un the fenders. but the fogs dont. i can hear the relay clicking, but no lights. my fogs do work normaling though. i wonder what it could be....

hehehe rebuilding the transmission on the side of the road must be fun :D

btw: euro style lights rock. there is a long beam light in them that flashes when you flash with the main lights inside.

yo brainiac.

i've got two manuals, one from the crashed 944S in the sig and the current 951 and both say "pull the stalk" 1/2 way to blip the lites, but neither mentions switchology.

when i've tested the blip in the garage/no work and finding out later that the person traveling in the opposite direction didn't see it, i figured something was wrong with the stalk as the fog lites worked whe the switch was on and the parking lites were on.

sitting in the car, i couldn't see the headlites flashing because they were closed and had tried various switch positions except off/off because it was too easy.

off/off, they work as advertised and clarified in the post.

you're terribly smart or someone shared with you this litle tidbit, franky i'm happy the post was made.:D

callmethewander 08-22-2007 05:01 PM

yo brainiac!?!?

anyway, i set up my lights so that when they're on if i open the glove compartment and push the cruise control stalk forward the right light closes and opens again so it looks like i'm winking! ;)

lol

that must have been quite a project ----- ya know, with the single headlight motor and shaft connecting both lights together....hehe....

Hey, nobody's mentioned my 911 weekend. It was too much fun chasing the group on the twisties. I honestly think I could have blown a couple of them away but on the straights...I didn't stand a chance against any of them except maybe the '69 912. I'm about done with my 16" phondials that are going to be 225's in the front and 245's in the rear and I'm putting in 200lb springs this weekend (mild but better than stock). Now if I could just find some M030 swaybars before the September event. I wish I could post the short video that I took but it's 40mb and wont load - maybe youtube?

looneybin 08-23-2007 09:50 AM

Tidybouy-
I bet you would have more fun if the group of 911's were chasing you.
I'm not yet a PCA member, but where is the September event? Do they let 'outsiders' crash?
It sure is fun taking a 944 & outcornering a 911

Tidybuoy 08-23-2007 05:00 PM

The September event is going to be a trip to Cartwright Station - I think that is up past Shaver. I don't have the exact date but I'll let you know tomorrow.

I can't see why you couldn't come along - they're always trying to recruit new members. For this particular trip and the one last weekend, it's the younger, faster crowd. Thye have other road trips going on but I'm guessing it's mostly the older, richer crowd - they've got one going to Santa Barbara next month - it's a 3 or 4 day trip with lots of stops and events.

Come along next month - I'll race ya....

p.s. you'd be surprized how fast these 911/boxter guys were going......

looneybin 08-24-2007 07:49 AM

I'd rather rip through the twisties than go on the wine & cheese tour anyday
