Wrong Pads?
 

Two years ago, I had the pads and rotors done on my car. I got them all from the now-defunct Tweeks.com.

In investigating a "whishing" noise, I discovered that my rotors were rubbing against my pads on all four wheels, constantly.

At Many944s' house last weekend, we discovered that my front pads were just a little too wide for the calipers and were binding. We shaved down the sides of the pads, but they still touched to rotors.

That got me thinking: maybe I have the wrong pads in this car all-around? Maybe the ones I have in are too thick? Can someone with an '86 951 measure a set of spare pads and tell me the thickness?

The other possibility is that all four calipers are sticking. However, the pistons seem to to back in to rest about 1mm out from the caliper. Is this normal?

i have the same noise, only the sound is like scraping, because of the pagid pads, which are very harsh. i thought it was bearing noise until i investigated.

Do the wheels spin freeely by hand when the brake is off???

I've had mine where the length of the entire pad was too long, but never was the pad thickness too wide. A quick touch on a grinding wheel thins them up real quick. Approximately how much are they too thick?

I just measured a set of new PBR XGB (Axxis Metal Master) pads for my 86 951.

At the area without anti-squeal backing they were 0.687" and 0.693" with the backing. I checked at several points and they are consistent. They will always contact some but shouldn't make any noise while driving, even with new pads/rotors. Are your rotors smooth and even or rippled?

No. None of the wheels do.

Thanks! I'll compare mine and it will give me a better idea if I got bad pads or have seizing rotors.

Thats bad, With the brake off you should be able to spin the wheels. Somthing is wrong
