Time for new tires?

It’s about time for tires. Will a 225-50-15 fit on the OE Stukes (sp?), phone dial wheels? First owner had 215-60-15’s on her. Nice prices on the Falken’s from Edge Racing but I wonder about them.

Phone dials aren't Fuchs (pronounced roughly "fukes") wheels.

A 225/50 will have approximately 866 revolutions per mile.

A 215/60 will have approximately 826 revolutions per mile.

You will make your speedometer and odometer read approximately 5% fast (i.e. when the odometer says you've traveled 105 miles, you will only have gone 100) if you use the 225/50 series tires.

They should physically fit though, since they are shorter, and since the optional wheels with the sport package were 225/50 R16 which means that the width should be OK.

You're welcome. And thinking about it a little more, if you're OK with the odometer discrepancy, then it might be a good swap actually. Especially if you plan to autocross the car since the shorter sidewalls will have less flex and you'll get better cornering response.

No, the rotation differential doesn’t bother me; I’ll remember it though when calculating speed. Again thanks.

I’ve always cherished a good handling car so the 50-series it shall be. I like the look as well.

Does anyone know about the Falkens (with a 360 tread-wear index…a bit high). I’m also considering Yokohama with a 280 tread-wear index.

I Had To Replace The Tires On My 944, Went With The Yoko Es100 225/50/15 Rear , And 205/55/15 Front. The Grip Is Inspiring, And So Far They Have Worn Very Evenly. The Specs On The 205/55/15 865 Revs Per Mile, 7.5 Inch Tread Width, 24" Diameter. Specs On The 225/50/15 886 Revs Per Mile, Tread Width 8.3 Inches, 24" Diameter.

How about that! I decided on the 225/50/15 Yokohoma Es100’s for all four a few days ago. Had an ancient set of Yoko’s on one of my Sciroccos and swear it was the best tires I have ever used. Why do you run a different size from front to rear?

Isn't that what they had stock? Staggered setup?

Tires

I recently replaced my stock 215-60-15's with 225-50-15's. They fit just fine, and have less flex in the side wall. I really like them. Some people run thinner tires up front. I was told this is done to prevent over stear in the turbo cars. Don't know for a fact though. I went with the same width front and back, that way I can rotate the to prolong tire life. Hopre this helps.

Yup, power-on oversteer in the turbo can be a problem, even with the staggered tire sizes. Found that out once again yesterday coming out of a 35-40 mph corner in second when boost came on before I had the car straight again and the back end started to come around.

The NA cars came with the same size tires on all wheels.
