87' 944S starter washer

Hello all, I am new to the forum and am excited to be a member. I am about to purchase a 87' 944s from a friend at work. But the starter is not engaging, so he pulled it off and I took it apart. I found out that the inspection cover/plug was not installed and some water and junk got into the starter. I took it apart and found dirt and other debris in the starter motor. I plan on taking it to work and cleaning it throughly. In my rush to get it apart I noticed a washer the size of the starter motor shaft laying on my bench. I don't remember where it can from. I mean either inside of the starter motor housing or on the outside. It is not the half washer/clip looking washer but a complete washer the same diameter as the half washer.

Does any one know where this goes? Or point to me a break down of the
starter itself.

I would like to put it back together tomorrow and start up the car.

Any help would be great....
Thank you
