Help with 944 2.5L

Hi folks,

I am new to this forum, been over on the Dorki forum for a few years.

Greetings!

I have an issue with my 944 2.5L N.A.

Last weekend I started it up, and boy it was running rough(never rough before, ever). Backfires, can't hold idle, noisy from the front of engine area.
removed dist cap, rotor is all torn up, cap is a little worn from the rotor being broken. purchased OEM cap and rotor, installed, same results, ran for ~ 10 sedconds before I shut it down. After pulling off the cap, I noticed that the rotor is rubbing oddly on the cap.

It seems like the distributor shaft is "wobbley" and causing the rotor assembly to rotor and rub the cap inconsistently, probably arcing all over the inside.

So I removed the timing belt cover, no issues visible.

But when I rotate the what I will call a "receving flange" (the metal flange on the distributor shaft that received the rotor assembly and secure to it with a small bolt) which apparently connects to the distibutor shaft is spins freely (does not engage on distrbutor shaft, but when I push it in and apply pressure, it seems to synch up and lock in place, and does NOT rotate or spin.

Do I have a busted distributor shaft, or I am I not installing something correctly? Attached is a picture of the shaft and the metal piece in question.

Thanks!

Howie

Welcome to pelican, There are lots of good people here to help. mmmm its a odd problem, That dist. shaft connects to the camshaft gear, the shafts is held on with a set screw. I would make sure everything is tight/installed and try again

Here is a exploded view if it helps, see if screw #27 is installed and tight

I'll take a look...the "new" OEM rotor has the shaft attached with a torqued screw, so this pic is a little different...the rotor assembly is firmly attached to the shaft, the "flange", the inside metal piece in the picture is the one that free wheels unless pressure is put on it inwards.

If you are talking about the rusty looking retaining collar.... It is connected to the actual cam shaft by the use of a key and keyway and a bolt through the front.

If you remove the silver colored smaller shaft and look inside the rusty colored retaining collar you will see an allen bolt or a cheese head bolt. Chances are this bolt has loosened up allowing the rusty colored retaining collar to move off of the key and now it spins freely. The dangerous part is it is the rusty colored retaining collar which holds the cam gear on the key which syncs the cam and valves to your pistons.

Good luck. It should be a quick fix.

BTW For cheesehead bolts torque to 65 - 70 Nm (48 - 52 ft-lb). If it is a hex head bolt, torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lb).

Welcome to Pelican,
Speedy

It should be a quick fix unless the key is damaged in which case you might as well plan a timing belt replacment which you replace the key. You need to pull the cam sprocket off to replace the key.

Pray that the bolt is just loose...
