944 Auto . Damper plate mod?

I have a 944 auto and the rubber damper plate is very worn. Cost of replacing it is $1000. To much. Heard of a mod. get flywheel off a manual engine complete with clutch which has a spring damper in it. Off S/H engine. Has anyone done this? will I have to change the torque tube as well?

If you spend enough time and money, you can put a man on the moon.

Anything is possible. Not everything is cost effective.

Why don't you try it yourself and report back???

Not spent much money or time and done it. Flywheel and clutch off S/H engine. Fits in place of Damper plate and flywheel. No mods to the torque tube. Sweet as a nut and all for 50 dollars. Not enough to put a man on the moon but enough to get my Auto 944 spinning. Next project. Get man on the moon. Maybe one day?

Don't forget the drive shaft on the automatic has a groove for a circlip and a spacer sleeve in front of the rubber damper that you want to replace. See parts 25 & 26 :

http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup/HTML/944_2_USA_85_88_KATALOG/307-00-Frame3.htm

This keeps the back of the shaft…with the flex plate and torque converter…from sliding back into the automatic transaxle.

Also this circlip must be removed before the torque tube can come out.

(I think Socal Driver is channeling through me.!)

Just replaced the Flywheel and damper plate with manual flywheel and clutch. Remove the clutch thrust bearing otherwise it will rattle. Clutch has a built in cussion drive. My 944 now drives as smooth as silk and all for 100 or $50 . It is not a five minute job as you have to remove the transmission from the Torque tube to allow it to move back far enough to remove the damper and the flywheel. I had to replace the rorque tube as well because some previous heavy handed mechanic had bent the shaft when changing the engine. But well worth the efort and the saving of money made it even better.

I'm impressed that you knocked this out in 5 days from query to completion.

I don's suppose you have any pictures of the process, eh what?

Something aproaching 25 hours on my back. Was well worth the trouble. Never gave it a thought about photos. But clarkes Garage have photos of Transimision, rear suspension removal etc. Plus Pelican Parts Technical diagrams all help in removing the required bolts. Just looked upon it as another of lifes challenges plus I can not afford to pay the going rate to do the job. Quoted 35 per hour. Dare say would have been quicker on a 2 post ramp but sill Mega Bucks. Now my next project is to get my Daughters 49 Chevy Pickup back on the road. More lying on my back sorting some body else Balls Up out. Pardon my spanish.
