Smile question gonna buy a 951 opinions plz

hello everyone my names rob... any way iam pretty confident in buying a 1987 Porsche 944 turbo its a 1987. iam thinking i could use the extra power. i currently own a 1988 944 n/a and iam in love i absolutely love these cars!
anyway the car iam looking at is a 1987 black 944 turbo and its selling for around 9 k its a euro spec that was imported from japan and i was wondering when i go look at the car what i should look for????
it has 110 000 km's and i talked to the guy and he says it needs a p/s pump and the front seat is ripped and he says theres a noise from the rear that could be a cv axle or wheel bearing and the paint is missing clear coat in spots on the front fender! is this a good buy?

any help full comments would be well appreciated
thanks rob

OK what country are you in, the US? if so i would say its not worth the $9K asking price. i bought mine for only $6500 and it is an 87 also and my other one costed me $6k and it too is an 87. and nether one has the amount of problems the one you are loOKing at has. and as far as being a euro spec there is no such thing on a 951 they are pretty much exactly the same world wide. nothing different with emissions or safety. power is the same the only one that i can think of that is any different it the (Swedish?) version has some different gears. and the occasional right hand drive car. but with the problems you listed i would offer him about $4-5k because you have to fix a lot in my boOK. axles? why would they be bad? dumping the clutch? abuse? front seal is a PITA. power steering is not much fun ether. i would go over the car real good loOKing for oil leaks and hack job repairs. when someone tells me there are noises coming from the rear of the car that could mean the trans is about to go that is about $2k? so talk him down as much as possible. i talked my second car down from 8500 to 6500 so it can be done.

It all comes down to condition; how many miles is 110K kms? Something around 63K miles, right? If so, this is a pretty low-mileage car. If the low mileage is matched by an excellent overall condition and a collection of service records is included, there is no reason why a 951 wouldn't command $9K plus. Heck, mine did - but it was virtually perfect inside and out and had every receipt ever applied to the car.

With flaking clear coat, ripped seat, a bad p/s pump, and a mysterious mechanical sound, however... myskyon is right, 9K is just too much to pay. If the seller were to fix these issues it would be another story, but as it is, I would offer him $6K, citing these problems.

sounds like a solid case for a PPI to me. The CV axels are cheap and easy to replace and the bearings arnt too bad but what if your mystery noise is the transaxel. The seats are easy to replace but the paint could become a very expensive problem to fix. With the number of low low mileage Japanesse 944's coming across these days I think you could hold out for a better one.

thank you verymuch every one for your opinion and i live in edmonton alberta Canada, so if people have a nice car they demand lots of money most 951's here go for 13-15k for a decent one which would compare to like a 7k car in the US . which dosent make sence because our dollar is extremely close if not gonna pass the american dollar and cars are so much cheaper in the US

nynor, low exchange rate is good/overvalued dollar is bad, yeah pres bush for not propping up the dollar. 110Kk, with torn seats and rear end noise? flaky paint indicates wreck and repaint. either the odometer has been replaced or this car has been abused; i second myskyon; if this car has never been wrecked, has full service records and new tires/clutch/rotors it is worth 6kish after paint, tranny work and PS pump. otherwise the next 10K miles are going to suck you dry (clutch$1500, timing belt $600, CV joints, rotors, etc)

Marghella, talk to AE1969 or JustinL as they are local to you and are very knowledgeable on 951's.
