Bad Cam Seal ?

I thought I had a leak at the rear of the "valve cover"... there is no valve cover is there? I am beginning to think its a cam housing base seal, how hard is this to fix? I am leaking about a half quart every 6-700 miles. Its definately coming from this area. Thanks

The rear cam housing seal is pretty easy to change. Its a cork gasket that leaks fairly often and is a $3 part from the dealer. The seal is sandwiched inbetween the rear of the camtower and the engine hoist ring / end cap. It can be a challenge to get back there but a ratcheting flex head wrench can do it. The main thing thats in your way is the engine wire harness coming through the firewall.

Its not the seal at the end of the cam housing, its the seal under it, I am guessing between the cam housing and the head. Its leaking between them near the back. Roughly near the arrow.

In that case you will need to remove the cam tower inorder to replace the seal. You can try to retorque the allen head bolts also.

check out www.clarks-garage.com

click on "Garage Shop Manual"

look under "Camshaft Assembly Removal"
and "Camshaft Assembly Installation"

You might as well order up new timing and balance shaft belts and do a whole cam tower reseal while you are at it.

You might want to evaluate you lifters if they are ticking.
