Rear Camshaft Gasket Replacement

So I did the search and didn't come up with what I was looking for.

Can you guys offer any tips on how to do it? It's so tight in there, I can't even get to all the bolts and nothing around it seems to move. Are there any special tools that would help make the job much easier?

It's one of the last things I need to do to the car to get it back up and running. Thanks guys.

it is a PITA. that's it. a 1/4" drive with shallow sockets is about the only thing that will make this less painful.

is it leaking oil? if so, how bad? have you tried just tightening the bolts?

lol yeah it is! I can barely get my hands in there at all!

Well I've got some type of oil leak coming from the back end and I can't think of anything else. I read up on posts and saw that this seems to be problematic and it was a cheap part so I would start there.

Never knew it would be so much work to replace a $2 part. lol

yeah its bad. the bolts on mine had backed out. a little tightening fixed the leak. you don't want to tighten really hard, as the gasket is cork and will get damaged.

It's a pain - easier to take the whole cam tower off. Trust me, when I did it with another PNW-er, we had to take it off and do it that way.

Ratcheting flex head gear wrenches! Its still a pain in the ass, but a little easier with these.

Compact cars require compact mirrors!

Yor wife/girlfriend will certainly have an old makeup compact with a mirror you can scavenge. This is one of those times that a small mirror in your toolbox is a must.

Yeah, when you need to do both it makes sense, doesn't it?

It does, but then again you have to actually explain what you were doing, which was not replacing only the cam box end gasket.........................

In other words nothing to do with the original posters question.
