Royal Purple Gear Lube

Last weekend I replaced my transmission fluid with Royal Purple 75-90 full synthetic. I only have about 100 miles or so on the clock with the new fluid, but I have to say to say shifting has greatly improved. Cold shift is slightly better than the old fluid, which I am not sure what it was (gold color). However, once warmed up shifting is very fluid and smooth, like butter!. Has anyone else tried the the RP? I was debating this versus Swepco.

I've been racing on it. It's louder, but I've liked it the last 2 years.
My race buddy said it's all die. Can't compare smoothness but my tranny is still working after much abuse.

Oh good. I was going to have to search but here is the thread!

How much does the 944 (85.5 NA) trans take? (5spd)

Going to buy some from the local speed shop this week. Anyone have the link to a walkthrough? Getting my Haynes manual shortly, but may be better methods from you guys to follow... =)

5-Speed transaxle takes 2 litres. With the car on a level surface pump it in until it starts to run out of the fill hole. Always remove the fill plug BEFORE the drain plug.

Will just draining it cold get all of the 2 liters out? Can it be 'over-filled'? Doesn't sound like it. What size sockets for the drain and fill? (Haynes manual arrives soon but I am sure some one would like to know).

=)

I think it is a 17mm Hex, but don't hold me to it! And no, you can't overfill it, when it comes pouring out your done!

Hey Jim, what does your race buddy mean by all die. Like dye in color?? It is a very neat purple color, but man does it shift nicely!

Easier than an oil change...

No, but you could try jacking up the passenger side of the car to help get as much out as possible.

You are correct. With the car on a level surface, you pump it in until it starts to come out of the fill hole. No chance of overfilling unless you deliberately try to do so.

Both are 17mm Allen sockets. I would recommend a 1/2" drive bit socket and breaker bar to get them out as they are usually very hard to get out. Make sure the sockets of the plugs are clean or you might strip them out. AZ carries the big metric bit sockets. About $10 for a set of three sizes including 17mm.

onZedge, thank you. Already have 17, and some other goofy sizes, in 6pt, from other car escapades. =)

Will hit it with PB Blaster and then see if I can get impact on it instead of breaker bar, just seems to work 'right' for removal. Installation I will use a torque wrench of course. =)
Thank you!

I wouldn't use an impact on it!! The housing is aluminum and you risk cracking it!! PB Blaster and a breaker bar is a better plan...

I have never encountered a bolt that will take on my 1/2" breaker bar!

10-4. It's just usually I do not get the cars very high (lousy jack range, but good jack stands), so some times leverage isn't best... I will use my pb + breaker bar.

Didn't think about a susceptible housing...

1982911sc,

Buddy says the purple is just a selling scheme. I'm like, no kidding... You mean it doesn't come from specially formulated noble class, Squids. But he is also a purist who puts in everything by the manual, published in 1987. I've had some good gear heads say stay away from Mobil 1, but I used that alot before in motor oil. Now it's Royal Purple XLR 20/50, Redline, or Liquid Molly Motor Oil; and Royal Purple Tranny Fluid. Mobile 1 was great on the street for normal driving but to thin for high track temps IMO.

It made a noticable difference in my 87 MR2 5spd with 99k on the clock, and the fluid I pulled out was 'new' regular stuff, still looked good. =)

Just had my 83 n/a tranny with lsd rebuilt. Rebuilder recommended Mobil 1 75w90. Bought 2 liters of Mobil 1. So far so good.

I have always used there gear oil and had very good results.

It seems to be the base line that others are measured by. I am sure some are better but for what I do it has served me very well. I was just curious if anyone had dome any type of comparison between Mobile 1 and Royal Purple

I looked on Clarks and didn't see any info, so I will ask. How do you change the tranny fluid? My car shifts nicely and it probably was done according to the maintenance schedule, but it might be another to-do item, part of my long term maintenance...
