Is there any simple mods to do to add more performance to my 944 NA? Cold air filter..? Chip.? Are they worth the money.? Just looking at tweeking little.. I am still having issues with my car running rich, bought a NEW O2, it go so bad I just unhooked it....runs pretty good that way.

Complete tune up is usually a good start.
A CAI is NOT really worth it. The stock set up is pretty darn good. Chips help a bit but you will be using Premium fuel (I like the Weltmeister chip I had but pulled it when fuel got over $3.00 a gal) Taking weight out of the car is like adding HP. Going to a smaller height / diameter tire will change the gearing a little. There is no cheep 20-30 HP on a NA car. Where these cars shine is in the corners and braking. Another thing to note is that the NA R&P is a weak point with these cars. You can add HP to them but you will then have to be more careful with the drive line. Dropping the clutch and speed shifts can over time cause you to pop the R&P. |

Under $700 there is really nothing short of a chip that will do anything for the car. Most chips do not do anything in terms of power but help smooth out the powerband and some raise the rev limiter. You can go with a more aggressive cam but they are costly. The JME cam is the only one i have heard any feed back about. Its $750 or $850 now and is proven from anywhere between 12 and 18hp depending on your setup. The problem with most cam's however is that it shifts the powerband and more often than not hurts the low end.

Believe me when i tell you, when u buy a Wilks Chip, it will feel like your driving a new car, the performance boost is incredible, i didnt believe it at first, but now im so happy i bought that chip. dont get any other chips besides a Wilks cip or you're wasting your money, Go through some old threads on here to read more about the Wilks chip

Derrick,
Do you have dyno #'s on your car to back up what you are saying? The "But Dyno" is about as accurate as a scud missile. What feels best is not always what is really the best. My bet is that the Wilks Chip substantially bumps the timing and ups the red-line cut out. This will feel like the car is producing more HP. In reality is will not be all that much. Increased Timing makes a car feel like it is pulling harder. I have dyno #'s from testing on our ITA car to back this up. I will be very blunt about this. To date there is no chip for a NA car that is the magic performance bullet for these cars. Most will help a little but nothing like what you speak of. I invite you to prove me wrong. I am not going to go read all the other threads I really don't have the time. And besides if those chips were as good as you say I am sure that what you are saying would be common knowledge. Just show me the dyno #'s. One simple link is all I ask. I want you to prove me wrong as it is what all us NA drivers have been wanting. Again; do it with Dyno #'s not wiled claims of "the performance boost is incredible". My response is compared to what? I propose this. How about Wilks gives me the chips and I will pay for the hour of dyno time to prove it. I will even invite anyone who wants to come and watch just to make sure that there is nothing more than a change in the chip for the test. |

I also have to agree with Dean. Not to accuse anyone of being wrong, but without any real proof, it may just seem to be faster (rather than you just wasted $200). Porsche has always built very well engineered cars, and while technology has evolved, I doubt you can improve on the N/A engine alot. All you are doing is raising the rev limit and changing the timing, which overall I would have to say is taking away from the "safety margin" that Porsche left, so the engine would last and be a good street car... So by having more revs, you may get a small more power (torque curve is most affective at 4-5k anyways, correct...?) but you may end up with more mechanical problems then stock... Just my thought, not trying to be offensive, and anyone else's input would be appreciated as well.

Going to have to agree, a full tune-up is a must. This includes vacuum lines too. My car ran much better (smoother and with more usable power) once I gave her a full tune-up and repaired about five broken or sketchy vacuum lines. She also starts quicker, almost as fast as I can turn the key!

I wonder whether there was an A/F log done during those runs. It would be interesting to see what teh engine was doing pre chip.
It is an impressive gain non the less

Im not sure, I think it was done a couple years back, when WILK was still on the forum, I think CJFusco Knows more about it then I do. I will say that Wilks chips are VERY nice, I run one myself and love it.
Just like any chip, It plays with timming and fuel maps. If your trying to make your car FASTER then I really dont think you should be worried about MPG. More power usually means you will need more FUel too. I agree that no chip is going to give you a 50hp Gain, But I do believe that if/when you buy the Wilk chip you will like it and its worth the $200 if you ask me.

Honestly, i dont really have any interest in getting dyno #'s, or anything of that sort, im not into racing or anything like that. All i know is ive had my 924S for 8 years now, it was my first car, i drove it without a chip for 8 years, last month i purchased a Wilks chip. And when i tell you the acceleration and speed has increased beyond my expectations, that is my opinion. And to your response about "Compared to what?", that's simple the acceleration boost is incredible compared to when i didnt have a chip in.
If you really want to know what Wilks does to his chip just go to his website. I really have no interest to prove you wrong, and in regards to my "wiled claims", they are solely my opinion, Take them or leave them, either way im going to have fun driving with my Wilks Chip in my 924S

Like i said, they dont do much in terms of power gains...but look at the difference in the torque curve and powerband..

So if you are tracking at at 5000+ rpm most of the time you will get some more HP and torque... If you are driving on the road, there are no real improvements in normal driving, and you will take away the safety margin that Porsche left in the engine and timing (on purpose, they do know what they are doing)... Sounds like the chip only has a place in a race car, not in a car that is needed to be dependable... Just my opinions, I'm sure I will get crap about it, but Porsche engineers their car's to the maximum potential, if there was more power to be taken from an N/A 944 engine, they would have done that stock.

Look at this from a different point of view. Isn't the easiest and most effective way to increase power gains is to improve your braking and handling. If you can stop shorter and go faster into a turn, the time is shorter. Not necessary a hp gain but certainly quicker.
This is my jim logic. I read allot and most of the people on this board agree, there isn't much bang for the buck getting more hp out of a n/a.
