Clutch? Transmission? Help!

‘85 944 (late year model)

If I’ve drive the car around town for a while the transmission starts to slip in gears 2-4 (maybe 5 but haven’t pushed it)

The clutch feels fine. No odd pedal, engages in and out of gear smooth. The issue comes when I’m on the throttle above about 2500 rpm. The engine starts to rev quickly but it’s not putting power to the wheels.

Mechanic thinks it’s *probably* the clutch. Full in out replace is $2400.

I’m ok with that but I just want to be sure I’m fixing the right problem. Anyone have any experience with an issue like this?

check that the coupler connecting the trans to driveshaft is fully seated and clamping bolts are tight.

are there any noises when it seems to slip?

Yep, probably the clutch. If you are handy, you "can" do it yourself. Requires some special metric tools.

No noise when it slips. Thanks for the tip on the clamping bolts. Can’t hurt to check.
