Removing gas sending unit.Help!!!
 

I'm trying to remove the sending unit in my 968. It is the type with the large plastic ring. There hence lies the problem...trying to remove that ring is turning out to be verrrrry difficult. Anybody have any suggestions for the proper tool or technique to get it loose? Also, does the gasket (I assume there is one) need to be replaced in the lucky event I get the ring off...

OK, got the sending unit out. I expected a cage for the float not a solid metal tube. How do you get to the innards to clean it out? If I spray engine cleaner in it to get the grime out do I rinse it with gas so the cleaner does not get to the curbs???

I just did the same thing on my 924. sounds like the sending unit is similar in the 968.

I was going to clean my sending unit and then replace - but I opted to buy a new one and install it. I think my Haney's manual had a short section on cleaning the sending unit - but I haven't got my manual nearby.

rinsing with gas does sound like a reasonable idea....although I have never tried cleaning this before.

I just removed and cleaned the sender in my 924S. Your sender is a little different (mine is just held in my by allen screws) but to take it apart there was a nut on the bottom of the unit. It is threaded on to part of the float assembly, so take it off and you can disassemble.

On the bottom, there is a very small nut, a 5 or 6mm nut. Once that is removed, the lower plastic cover comes off and the aluminum tube will as well, exposing the float and level mechanism. Be careful as there are two guide wires that are very thin and fragile.

the guide wires are resistor wire and make contact with the float. Don't damage. You might be able to use some spray contact cleaner to clean them

Make sure the wires do not spin around the assembly, while loosening that nut (which is Loctite-d by the way)... They will snap as they are VERY fragile.
