Exclamation 944 To The 968

My question to you guys is can the 968 91-95 Rear Bumper be made to fit the 85.5-89 944?

Someone out there did it (you'd have to search either here or Rennlist for the photos), but it took a lot of fabrication work, IIRC.

i've seen a 968 rear bumper on a 944 S2, but not an early car

by the way, the 968 model years were from 92 to 95, not 91 (though the ROW cars were released in 91)

I can see why people would want to do this - the 951/S2 front looks great as is, but the rear still looks like a car from the 70s (although the rear under-spoiler helps). I'm surprised that more rear updates haven't been made for these cars.

Thanks guy's for responding so quicky. Yes! that is something I am dying to do, just wondered if it could be done! if it turns out to be too expensive I will just get the Nascar street Aftermarket rear bumper from the Porsche Palace. Not a bad price if your on an when I get the money buget.

Thanks Again

I wonder how long it will be before Porsche jumps down their throats and makes them change their name

I didn't think it was possible to fit 20"s under a 944?

anything is possible - this is one of those "just because you can do something doesn't mean you should" situations

the problem with big wheels on these cars is the inability of the hubs and spindles to handle the loads created - the wheel weight, tire weight and the added stress of the increased force of the larger tire are more than the parts can handle - even 18s are a BIG question - it is VERY common to break a hub or a spindle with large wheels

porsche even went so far as to put out a memo warning against 18s

the key is to keep the weight down - total tire/wheel combination should not exceed 55lbs per rear and 53lbs per front

early cars have even lower limits

it also hinders both acceleration and braking - the increased rotational mass is not a good thing

there is also a lot more load transferred to the bushings and such, wearing them out faster

Hmmm.. I personally think they look pretty bad.
Anything over 17" on a 944/951/968 looks out of place and not in proportion compared to the rest of the car.

There are some after market kits for the back of the 944 I think. fiberwerks had one I believe and there was a place in Colorado if you are interested, I'll try to look that up. Here is the fiberwerks link:

yeah but that fiberworks piece is just a bumper cover and does nothing to update the tail light area....in my opinion that's one of the biggest 'wow' things about the 968 rearend.

Someone should look at comming up with a fiberglass (or other material) piece that could fit in place of the whole width including tail light openings and use other tail lamps...maybe even 968 or late 928 lamps.

LOL...DOh!

I must've been half sleeping after a long day at work...

On topic; I did see a 944/951 with a 968 rear end here in SoCal sometime last year. It was just in a blink of the eye on a parking lot, so I couldn't check out what it exactly was...Looked pretty cool though.

There is a fiberglass bumper available. It just takes alot of body work on the 944 to get it on there. Any decent body guy should be able to this.

idesing635...that's just a fiberglass version of the back of your car...I was talking about something slightly different which could be installed without having to cut out the metal underneath the trunk key....to install the 968 tail the whole area where the 944 tail-lights live has to be removed. It can and obviously has been done but it's rather major surgery.
