So toasted block right?
See attached photos taken right after head was lifted off... What are the green blobs? Coolant? Caption Obvious would say that it needed a hg!

Obviously the best answer is rebuild time. It's been my experience that boring and buying oversized pistons isn't a good option with these motors as the pistons are so expensive unless you can find someone that has some cheap. Buying a new block is usually the less expensive option. I'll see if I can find a couple options for you close by. The part that would concern me is the scratch in the cylinder wall...all the rest probably wouldn't matter too much although sometimes antifreeze does bad things to bearings and piston rings. If it hasn't set any length of time with antifreeze on the bearings, you are probably ok with the antifreeze part. The scratch will cause a loss in compression but without knowing how deep it is, it's hard to say how much. With one cylinder having lower compression, the engine will not idle smooth. If you decide to put it back together, make sure you clean everything including the crankcase very well. Good Luck.

Nevermind the last question...if you are buying just a block, make sure your tensioner is the same in both engines unless they give you the parts for the timing belt area. If you buy a complete engine, it doesn't matter unless you like the auto tensioner which has pros and cons. Other than that, I think the blocks are the same. Zims has new short blocks for 2500 I think. Also here is a couple recycling places you can try:

Jeff, do you know where you can get pistons after boring? The last I checked they were not available and if they were, they were almost 600 dollars per piston.

Have you considered sleeving the engine? I'm not intimately familiar with rebuilding these engines, however, I have rebuilt a few foreign car engines with good results. I had a BMW 325 that I bought whacked in the front. The collision drove the water pump shaft right through cylinder #1. I had a local machine shop sleeve that 1 cylinder (about $125), found a used piston from a BMW performance shop for $0, honed the remaining cylinders and reinstalled the remaining pistons, and ran that sucker for 9 years and over 220K miles.

I assume you are talking about dry-sleeving. These engine don't handle that very well with the already-thin cylinder walls. I have seen them successfully wet-sleeved though. (Much more $$$$.) |

Sorry for the lack of detail. This was almost 20 years ago (86 325 I bought in 88 with 14K miles on it) and I'm not that familiar with the actual machining of dry vrs wet. I simply stripped the block and took it to a machine shop. They bored out cylinder #1, hot pressed a metal "tube" into the cylinder, rebored the new "tube" to the piston diameter (I gave them the used piston I picked up from the performance shop so they could match the piston to the bore.) I reassembled and drove for the next 9 years |
I am considering all options,
Dry sleeve, Wet Sleeve (Darton), Nicom plating, bore and oversize pistons, new long block. One question is about the dry-sleeving. I understand that many have heard that they are problematic due to expansion rates of aluminum and iron. What about real word -- who has seen dry sleeves move, fail or otherwise screw the pooch? -Dan C. |
There are ways to sleeve the motor (sort of) where the cut out the complete cylinder and put in a new one....great solution...again very expensive. the resleeve process is over 1000 dollars and then the sleeve isn't alusil any longer and you have to buy new rings and pistons. The new sleeves are stronger than normal cylinders and can run really high compression ratios though....great for a supercharger or turbo setup to increase the horsepower but then you have to worry about the bottom end as well.
