Cold weather oil
I have a 1985/2 944 with 153,000 miles on it. The past summer I ran 20/50 wt oil. I just replaced that oil with 5/30 wt oil. On cold start ups the lifters rattle for about 1/2 sec. The rest of the day the car starts fine, no rattles. What is a better wt oil so I don't get the noise on cold starts. Thanks

Porsche has revised the preferred oil to use: http://www.wrightune.co.uk/downloads/approved_oils.pdf. I had been running the Castrol GTX 20-50 and changed to Castrol GTX 10-40 with no lifter noise. BTW I was in AutoZone Friday and they DO have the Porsche approved 0-40 Mobil One in stock for $6.50 +- qt. if you decide to use for those winter snows.

We see similar temps based on our locations. I used to run 10w30 but i did not like the 2 bar oil pressure sitting in traffic on the warmer days of winter. 2 bar is fine, but honestly i dont like seeing it go lower than 3 bar. I am just paranoid like that. I have been running 10w40 in my 944 since '04 and what i did for 2 years in my 924S during the winter months (usually november through march or april) and 20w50 the rest of the year. No problems ever with lifter clack either.
I also run Castrol GTX, but the high mileage variety. The Turbo gets Mobil 1 synthetic 15w50, only because thats what was being used all of its life...its not driven much in the winter anyhow.
