Windshield Washer Reservoir Leaks - What could it be?

I know the post sounds lame. My 944 is at my parents house and I cannot see her or work on her. I know the Windshield Washer Tank leaks, I filled it up with 2 gal and it all spilled out after sitting in the garage for an hour... =(

Is the pump attached to the reservoir? Or does it suck it out via tube? What is the most common cause - cracked plastic, or leaky pump connection?

Input welcome, I miss the car I've put 10 miles on.

Most likely just old, cracked plastic in bottom of reservoir.

Any reason not to fix it with plastic-specific epoxy?

Is it possible to put a bladder in there or is the pump directly connected somewhere?

I found mine had cracked at one of the mountings. I just used silicone seal and it has lasted for years. There are at least a few different tanks, it sounds like you have the large one, it is easier to take out the bottom.

Any tips on how to remove the pump from it? Have not tried removing this yet but worried about cracking/damaging anything else.

Yes, it's huge, seems to be the same as the only one I found on Pelican Parts search. Thanks for the tip. =)

Pump is easy to take off. It snaps in place. If you know where the leak is, epoxy or silicone will work fine. If it is beyond repair, look at Ebay. They come up occasionally. Check your hoses too.

Good luck,

i bet it is a seal at the pump. the pump just pushes into the reservoir housing, if i remember correctly. what year is it?

As per my profile, 85.5 (I think it's in there!)

Do I need a replacement seal (is there one), or do I just need a little 2 part epoxy... It very well could be... oh wait no, it's lower, it holds 'some' fluid, but it is well below the pump... must be cracked elsewhere...

I think pulling it would be best. From the bottom though. =)

Also, my cap is cracked, should I replace it? It's like $6.00 or more IIRC, is it worth it besides aesthetics?

you need to put the year in your signature line.

well, the pump is pretty low. i'd pull the pump and see how the seals look. i think it is just an 0-ring or something.

for that year it is going to take some major disassembly to get the reservoir out. sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Really? I thought maybe I could get it out through the bottom as a previous poster said, take out the lower pan, etc?

I wonder if it would be 'wrong' to patch it in place, i.e. repair it from the outside if I find the leak using water or similar...

=) I'll take my time with it. Maybe I should make a good walkthrough! =)

the pump that presses into the tank near the bottom is for the headlight washers...
the actual pump is clamped, in plain sight, to the top of the tank, right below (towards the front) of the reservoir cap.

hmm... that is odd. i replaced the entire reservoir and found only one pump, pressed into the housing, towards the front bottom. maybe its a model/year difference.

Do you have headlight washers? I don't and I only have the pump towards the top as Eldorado said...

nope. no headlight washers. i checked, and mine is as i described. i that case, your reservoir must be cracked.
