Ignition Lock repair
Saw the process in Clark's garage for removal of the switch assembly but it didn't show how to take the lock cylinder out of the column shaft cast piece. Can anyone tell me. Pictures preferred. My key sticks so I was hoping to find out if it can be repaired without replacing the with a new key/cylinder.

Just went to VW dealer. Service guy marked the spot and said to drill 1/8" hole to access pin to push in to release cylinder. Can anyone verify. See picture attached.

Someone recently mentioned that there was a casting dimple or simliar in the location that you needed to drill.
I have not done it, so can't help beyond that. Cheers, Keith |

I wouldn't and never had to. VW is different so I would not use that info, just my opinion.

OK guys. I'm waiting patently for some help. Someone has done this before. I can't be the only one. I don't want to randomly drill holes in the casing. There is no dimple of mark. I only have the marker mark the VW service guy put on. See above picture. I have no idea if the guy knew what he was talking about. The casting is expensive so I don't want to wreck it.
I would prefer to remove it and see if it can be repaired so I don't have mismatching keys for the car.

remove the electrical portion..
![]() ![]() here's a pic of what you're trying to remove.. it looks like it might even "pull out and twist".. but i'm not sure on this.. maybe give frank at porschapart a call and see if he's familiar with how to remove it?

Since you already have the assembly out, take it to a locksmith.

If it is the tumbler you want put the key in and turn it one click and pull it out at the same time. Did you try it!?

The lock does not come out on it's own in any position. Iv'e never seen a lock that did. They all seem to have a pin somwere that holds the assembly in. See the picture above. It has a VW part number and simble on it so I would think that they made our lock asseblies. It's the same as the one in clarks garage that shows the process for removing the electrical portion of the switch. If anyone has the lock tumbler ass embly like the one shown above with the two keys, tell me were the lock pin is.

With the key in, did you try pushing the steering wheel lock pin in towards the tumbler?

Yes, this has all been tried. Locks don't work that way. There will be a retainer pin somwere that required a drilled hole to access. This is what I need some information on. A lock smith will help once the tumber assembly is out but he won't know how to get it out. If I can't get any help here, then all I can do is purchase a new lock and see were the pin is.

OK finally got someone with the information on clarks. So this is the final post for technical information to help others. See attached for the drill location. Did this this morning and with a punch or whatever, removed the lock. DW40 and an air compressor, add some grease and seams to be ok. Will reinstall and see if it will be ok or have to replace the tumbler assembly.
