Replacing Hood Release Cable

Has anyone replaced the hood release cable on a stock turbo car before? It looks like you have to remove the entire air air cleaner assembly as well as the MAF to connect the cable to the release mechanism. Is this the case or is there an easier way?

I attached the new one to the old one and pulled from the outside... threaded through from what was left on the inside after i removed it from the handle. or you could go the other way if your handle is removable..

Thanks! More specifically, I'm taking about where the cable attaches to the release mechanism under the hood. On a turbo car, the air box completely obstructs getting into the release mechanism from behind so that you can attach the cable and lock it down with the set screw.
