Where did my low beams go?

OK, so I've been chasing this problem for a couple of weeks now on my 1991 951 and can't figure it out.

All of a sudden, when I turn the lights on, I get high beams only, and a dimly lit high beam indicator in the instrument cluster.

So far, I've checked all 4 headlight related fuses, and they're fine. Headlight knob on the dash, and it's fine.

Ran some tests with a multimeter at the headlight bulb sockets and everything seemed to indicate the headlight switch on the steering column was at fault, so today I replaced it with a brand new unit but the low beams still won't come on.

What's going on here?!

common problem that I have found with 2 different 944's recently is that the wiring gets brittle and breaks and you can't tell because of the protective shieth that covers the wires. The problem areas are under the hood right before the headlight cover. There is a loop that moves when the light goes up and if you take the wiring apart there you may find your problem. I too thought it was my switch. All I had was high beams and would blow a fuse on low beams just for drivers low beam and traced it to those wires up front.

Thanks, I'll look for the loop, although this is happening on BOTH sides simultaneously, not just one. What did you do? Splice in some new wiring? I'm very reluctant to cut this harness apart.

Hi, took off about 6 inches of the wire sheith , 3 inches on each side, after I found a cut wire and just used crimped on butt connectors to put the wires back together and I suppose you could wrap the whole thing afterwards with electrical tape to mimic the original sheithing.

Please define: fine

Did you use a volt meter to check if you have power to the fuses in the fuse box? Did you use a volt meter to check if you have power from the headlight switch? Did you use an ohm meter to check if the fuses were bad?

"Fine" is not good enough. If you want help troubleshooting an electrical problem, you must be specific and detailed.
