thanks GostRidr. i'm running michelin 255/40/17. no real problems... at slow speeds it's kind of hard to turn, but i think it's a combination of the tires and manual steering put together.

17" wheels are a bit large for the early cars with steel control arms and manual steering.

I would've gone with 16" fuchs wheels or replicas myself, but to each his own.

At any rate, if you're going to run 17"s, you'd better replace the control arm caster blocks (supports) with the stronger M030 kind, or you'll tear out the control arm bushings before long.

The 1983 cars are relatively rare, since only around 5,500 cars were imported to North America.

They didn't screw up the windshield, you are just missing the 'gasket' that goes in there..

I'll take some pics to show you.

BRB

I'm back...

Sorry that these images are poor, I really need to get a new camera.

First picture shows the 'gasket' in place.

This pic shows where I pulled it from the channel. With the gasket removed you can see between the glass and window frame, and even see the clips that hold the frame in place.

Those images show why it was advertised that the 85.5 944 had a 'flush mounted windshield'.

I don't know where you can find those gaskets new, or even what they are called. Just do your best to describe them to someone parting out an early car, I got mine pretty cheap from a member here.

The gasket is practically just a 1/2" Square rubber foam stick that is molded to fit in between the frame and the windshield, and has a bend at the top. There is one per side and they are different parts just mirror images.

Can you post a pick of what you are talking about. If I think I understand what you are saying then that is how the windshield is installed in the pre 85.5 cars.

thanks for your replies on my windshield issue... attached is a pic. the passenger side seems to have a little more of a gap than the drivers side. if anyone has a parts car that can part with those for a good price, let me know...... that wind noise is driving me nuts

thanks

Steve,

There isn't anything wrong with that and all you need is the rubber strips that fit in there. Nice looking for an '83.
