'83 944 steering column wiggle
am i missing a piece here?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197948712.jpg before i took the dash out, the steering wheel would move around 1/4" in any direction without turning the wheel. (i took the dash out for the rollcage i'm getting installed) i am looking at the bearing in the ignition switch housing and the black steering column shaft, and they are different sizes, leading to the wiggle. Is there a bushing or something that fits on the black shaft? help!! |

maybe i have a later ignition switch, the bearing is complete and turns freely without binding, maybe it's just a different bearing than the early ones. Is this is a question of later ignition switch with early steering column? The steering wheel didn't always wobble like this, and i was careful taking it apart.
hmmm. |
My US 83 was vin #610 so it was a very early car. PET shows two pieces, more like yours. They are called the support ring #171 419 341 and clamping sleeve #171 419 549. Other than that there's a slip ring at the rear of the horn assembly but I doubt if that takes up any play. I wish I could help more.

There is also a bushing at the firewall where the shaft goes through. If this for any reason is not properly in place, you will get a wobble. I think 2Tight has it right though, mine looks like his and mine is #7223. Whats up with the holes in your ignition cylinder housing? Maybe someone didn't put it back together right when the cylinder got replaced?

Maybe this will help it's a pic from the rear with the switch housing off. There is a plastic spacer that slips over the shaft in front of the bearing, did you remove this?

If you don't have that sleve, I'm pretty sure I have one. I'll have to wait until the nephew takes his nap to look. I have a box in his Daddy's attic that I almost forgot about. I'm sitting for my brother at his house today. Can't wait to see what I put in it. "Tired yet Harrison?"
This kid is amazing, any Porsche he has seen is autmatically mine. He doesn't know a 911 from a 944, but he knows who it belongs to. He's almost 2.:D |
Are the two cap head screws that attach the steering column to the main body tight?
|
I had the same problem. There is a nylon bushing that fits over the shaft and in the bearing. It goes in from the rear. A little tricky to get it to seat properly. I put it in the bearing and then pressed it on to the shaft. Very tight fit.
|
Yeah, I seem to remember there being a black plastic sleeve that fits on the shaft. I'm pretty sure the 924S is the same as the early cars in that respect.
|
i have the plastic sleeve, it doesn't solve the wobble. the screws attaching the column to the body are tight. i don't know why there is an extra hole in the ignition switch. i think ship rider is talking about what i need. where can i get one of those nylon bushings?

i know that since this is a racecar, the steering wheel lock was disabled, maybe that's the extra hole in the ignition. thanks for your help guys.
