84 944 w/ 7k miles.....what's it worth?
and, second major question....what could go wrong with it? Clearly a 'newish' old car.....but just sitting around all that time? whadaya think?
the adv reads: "I am selling my 1984 Porsche 944. The car only has 7k miles on it. I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle. THe first owner barely drove this car and only garaged it. The car is in good condition. No mechanical problems at all. It is a 5 speed manual. It has sunroof. 4 cyl 2.5l engine." |

Is it possible that the odo has flipped? 7000 miles in 24 years is under 300 miles per year. Even on a Ferrari this would be considered very very low. IF it truly does have 7000 miles it could be a fantastic car with a few grand invested. The problem with such low mileage is that every rubber component could rot, seals wont seal, rotten gas etc. I would always recommend a PPI but would doubly recommend one with this car just to verify that the mileage is plausible and to get a realistic view of what needs to be done to put it on the road.
My 944S was purchased with 130,000km on it (about 80,000 miles) which I would consider fairly low. This hasnt stopped me from changing the starter, belts, water pump, shocks, tires, CV axels, wheel bearing adjustment, all the fluids. The PO replaced most of the AC, rebuilt the head, ignition. Long story short these cars arent cheap to own but are a lot of fun. |

Ugh. So much to replace, and to anticipate breaking. My mechanic had a 924S with 12K miles, and the owner was trying to sell it. They were asking $8K. Nobody would buy it for that much - everything was original, except the filters. Even the tires. EVEN THE BELTS. Good for a museum, and that's about it.
Car was still worth about $5K. They should have just driven the damn thing.

I agree!! This car should be mint. The interior should be flawless. The engine compartment should be clean; body in perfect shape.
What could be bad? Gaskets - probably dried out Tires - need to go Fluids / coolant- need replacing timing belt / water pump - need replacing Fuel system - probably varnish A/C - I doubt if it works Battery - need replacing Brakes - ????? I would give this a hard look. If the car was garaged kept, the millage right, the condition mint and if the price is right - I would jump on this. Ah!!! the price. Hm.......... not a classic/collectible car yet. Not a turbo or S2 - I'm guessing at $6K - $8K. You need to spend some money here. It comes down to what you need to spend plus the price of the car. It depends on the emotional attachment and your wallet.

I saw a sub 20K 84 944 at a concours last year that was amazing. If they are taken care of while stored things can last. This one had it's original tires but they were in great condition (probably had been treated regularly) and all the under hood rubber was like new but all original. The owner said he drove it about once a month and always started it and let it run when being stored for longer periods. I could have sworn it was a 944 right off the boat in 84.
It drew a ton of foot traffic at the concours, right up there with a mint 356 and a 1994 flachbau...

Well Wow thats so Cool, I have a 1987 Porsche 924S with only 20,000 miles on it which I bought for under 3k, but I can easily selling it for over 7k. I am guessing about 12k and up is a nice price but it depends on history, condition, etc.... But if I were you I would just Drive it and Enjoy it. It truly is not worth selling it. It basically is a NEW Porsche just build 2 decades ago. Can you really get a better car for around 12k. I do not think so. But whatever you choose you can not deny the desire the want for another Porsche..... "Once a Porsche Owner, ALWAYS a Porsche Owner."
