Need Help - Swaybar Bushing
so my car is on jacks, my sway bar is off and my bushings are the wrong size.
Going by this breakdown here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/PartsLookup/search.cgi?command=show_page&Catalog_Name=944_USA_ 82_85_KATALOG&Illustration=402-05&Line_Item=4 it offers more than one size. i dont know which size i do need. i have no way of measuring my swaybar. does anyone know what size is on an 84'? |
As long as your car does not have the factory sport suspension, it should be a 20mm front i believe. The best way is to measure it though. You can pick up a cheap vernier caliper from Home Depot or your local autostore for less than $5-10.
|
or just grab a 20mm wrench, if it fits closely you gots a 20mm bar ;)
(be sure to try a few larger or smaller just to be sure) |
Should be part number 477 411 053G 20mm
|
thats what im figuring. i ordered the 24mm on Pelican just by a guess. When i called to see if i could change it, i got the rudest guy who was no help.
i cancled the order and just ordered them from Autozone locally. |
Regarding the sway bar busings. I just installed a 968 M030 bar on my car and to my surprize, it used the same bushing mounting bracket. So, I am assuming that as you increase bar size, the bushings just get less & less rubber to make room for the larger bar.

UPDATE
Well i went down to go talk to a local shop. they measured my sway bar and fount that it was just under 24mm. Is that common or obviously from another car |

EDIT: This might be were I saw it originally: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/susp-15.htm HTH. |
Looks like you have the 23mm bar that was standard on the Turbo. I put one of those on, as well as an matching 18mm rear.
Are you doing anything to the rear? |
havent even looked at the rear. tomarrow im doing the struts, breaks, bushings and replacing the wheel bearings. next week i'll do the rer bearings and breaks
|
Sounds good. Just make sure you balance the front and rear. The 18mm swaybar goes great with your front bar. Not all 944's came with the rear swaybar...Mine didn't.
If the front's too stiff, the car will understeer. You can balance that by adding a rear swaybar. |
