manual to power steering.....

what's the difficulty level on the swap..... and along with that, what exactly would i need as far as hoses, seals and stuff like that?

i don't think i like the manual steering too much. it may be that my wheels are too big, but i think i'd add power steering before i'd get rid of my rims..... i know that a lot of other people would rather have manual.

and if you're not too far from where i live and you'd rather have manual steering, i'd be willing to swap. (well depending of the answers to the above questions.)

I wish I were closer to you to swap with you. You should have no trouble selling the manual rack and using the funds to buy everything you need to do the swap. I don't know the details, but it is not very hard to do.

You'll need the lower steering shaft, the rack, lines, bracket, belt, tensioning rod, pump, tie rods, and a few others I'm sure I left out.

It can't be very hard to do, but I wouldn't do it.

I can trade you everything you need for your manual rack. I prefer the manual rack for the track cars and keep the P/S on my street cars. I have about a half dozen parts cars with P/S setups you can have. Let me know if you're interested.

had an 83, then an 84; disliked steering feel so much I removed the power steering pump completely, sticky 225mm tires, loved it, everyone, inc. my ex-wife, who drove it agreed. my opinion: you either have steering issues or you need to hit the gym

There are probably a lot more 944 guys looking to go to manual steering than guys looking to go the other way, so there should be takers out there for a trade. I converted 3 of my 944s to manual steering over the years and if you do it right, the parts are always in short supply used.

You can try a narrower front tire to see if that reduces your steering effort. Anything over 205 or 215 tends to require more effort than some people like, but these are sports cars after all...if you are at 225 or shoehorning something even wider in there, you gotta make a personal call on whether the additional grip is worth the increased low speed steering effort.

If you can't cut a trade, it will be an expensive upgrade to buy the parts new.

(BTW, the cheap way to go to manual is to fabricate a bypass recirculating tube on the rack from one fitting to the other, thus disconnecting the pump - good to do as a test for you guys considering going to manual steering, to see if you really like it.)

Hey Steve, I have the complete power set up from my 924S that should work, rack/boots/lines/pump/reservoir and it's all in boxes ready to go. All the stuff was removed by the previous owner and worked fine. I'm in the Cleveland area also, so it shouldn't be to hard to get together. I'd rather sell everything as I don't need another manual rack, send me a message if your interested!

Check first that your short nose 83 crank will accept a PS pulley, I don't think it will but what do I know?. I'm not saying it can't be done but just make sure you can do it before trading anyone for your manual rack set-up.
