Oil Pressure Sending Issue?

Ok, got a question for everyone. I got the N/A 86 944. I recently changed the Oil in my car. Not sure what was in it before due to purchasing the car earlier, so I don't know if the brand or weight changed. Replaced the filter and Oil drove for almost w weeks. Have a small Oil leak at the front seals, so i ahave a little leakage. Well Friday, I noticed that the Oil Pressure guage started to fluxulate and showed Low oil pressure, except when giving it gas. Checked the Oil it was about aquart low, put a quart in on Saturday, noticed that my Oil filter was a little lose, I guess I did not put it on tight enough, so I had a little Oil leaking from there. The Oil pressure sending unit was drenched. After putting the oil in, started up and the pressure worked fine, drove areound the block and came home, it started acting up again. Looked at the Oil level, still full, and no Oli leaks in the area of the filter and a very little coming from the timing cover, guess the oil chage might have helped a little. Looking at the Oil sending unit, it looks to be pretty beat up, several dnets in it, looks like somone made it work before! I am thinkg the sending unit might be going out, but not sure. It dosen't burn any oil, runs good. Let me know if I am going to the correct direction, or am I missing something, Thanks Mike

what weight did you put in?
also you can hook up a mechanical gauge to verify pressure but I would replace the dented gauge anyway, not sure of the cost new but if it's crazy high or NLA you can go good used.

Hi Jon, not sure if the 951 uses the same cooler as the N/A but if it does you can actually leave the stock sender in place and screw the mechanical gause in right below it and to the right, remove plug #37 in the diagram and its the same thread as the N/A senderand is the same passage as the stock sender so readings can be compared.

Will do that. I found a new Sender on eBay for 25.00 figured I would change that first befoer I really get into it. Talked to a few mechanics at work toady and they said that more than likely it is the sending unit due to it just starting. Does good when first starting, and untill it warms up then it starts acting up. Noticed today that the oil pressure needle vibrates when it is acting up. Dosent sit still, but only when ti starts acting up. Figured that will be the first stop then go from there. Thanks Mike

My sender bounced like that for two years. It finally failed a few months ago. Replacing the sender is my taking-the-car-out-of-storage project for the spring.
