What could go wrong next?
Hello all,
I am curious to know a future shopping list of sorts in terms of repairs. I have an 85.5 NA auto w/ 93K. In the last three months since I bought it, I have had a timing belt, water pump, radiator replacement, oil/filter change, gear oil change, and cv joint rebuild. Now the flex damper plate is being replaced. The car is in excellent cosmetic condition. All the electical functions work fine. Tires, brakes, rotors have lots of life left. When my mechanic first pulled the air filter he said it looked terrible but the spark plugs looked perfect and was given a clean bill of health untill the flex damper plate let go. I would be interested what to expect in the future based on the experience of others on this forum. Regards Dietrich |

Warm greeting Dietrich,
I now understand that you own an automatic. The Future? I have carefully determined that the visually pristine Porsche has internal decay. When you have time I would suggest you research how to do the oil cooler seals, and do evening reading on how to replace the head gasket. http://members.rennlist.com/tom86951/headgasket.htm The vacuum lines will need attention as well as the heater control valve-replace if you see any leakage. $20 at Pelican. It drips on the bell housing. Get a spare fuel pump relay-DME and probably a new voltage regulator. I do not wish ill to befall you. John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |

You have pretty much hit all the big ones already.
Other possible, common items in addition to what John said: Fuel pump - seems to go out more in the cold weather. DME relay - always keep a spare with you shocks/struts - if they are fine now, dont worry, more miles you put on they do end up going. KYB are cheap (around $150 for all 4 corners), and Koni's being the most expensive, figure around $800. ICV & tps can go bad, but aren't that expensive. of course there is still tires, breaks & AC. but that's normal items on any car. If you can, do some of these things yourself. CV's could of been done in about 3 hours and are easy to do (just a pain to get the bolts out). Rear shocks are very easy too, well if you have an impact wrench. And keep posting and asking questions. There is a good amount of knowledge here.
