How often do you drive your 944?

Hello all,
I would be intersted to know how often you drive your 944.
Once all the major repairs/maintenance issues are taken care of, how many miles a week/month/year do you drive your car? How does the car treat you?
Have any of you ever broken down?
Do any of you take your 944 on a long trip (500+miles) without worry?
Just curiuos.

We have two drivers (wife and I) and four vehicles, and the 944 probably gets the least use. If the weather is nice, I'll take it to work one day a week (20 miles RT). It's been totally reliable (including a 5 hour drive to VIR, two days on track, and 5 hours back), but if my life depended on getting there, I'd leave the 944 in the driveway!

It's still a fairly modern car (fuel injection) so it's going to be reliable. Lots of stuff that breaks is not the kind of thing that leaves you stranded.

Mine is my Daiy (and only for now). I drive it across the country on a regular basis. I have 223K on the clock. I can't say I have not had a single problem. Bolts loosening, broken tensioners, clutch failed once (only towed twice, once was an accident). I have been known to drive 1,000 miles just cause. It does show the wear however.

I drive mine only on race day.

I'm not sure how many miles in a year, but they're all going around in silly circles.

Mines pretty much a daily driver. 80 mile round trip commute. I alternate between it and another vehicle. But have been using it more since gas prices shot up.

Mine is driven daily to work for a total of 60 miles per day. I drove to Ky for New Years to see the in-laws and made the 1500 miles without concern. I did have to get towed home from Summit Point last summer after the engine decided to go into early retirement, but have had no other trouble with the car. The trans is starting to make some whining noise, but I still feel good about the reliablity. Once the weather breaks (or the trans), I will replace the transmission and be good to go.

Reliable!?

I drive my car every day to work, about 60 km round trip mostly high speed country roads, quite often go for a drive after work and will usually go for a blast on the weekend. Have done about 20,000 miles ( yes I got MPH speedo over here too) in the last 12 months. Replaced the original head gasket at about 114,000 Miles and repaired the DME relay at about 125,000 Miles. Car has now got 128,000 miles and is ultra reliable considering some of my daily travel usually involves country dirt roads and includes my driveway which is a bush track about 1 Mile long that climbs a very steep mountainside that no other two wheel drive cars will climb ( I love LSD..... The diff I mean. lol ). 500 Mile journey? If your car is looked after I wouln't even think twice and will often rack that up on the weekend, and no I don't pamper mine. It gets driven to the full extent of its capabilities.

My 83 was a daily driver for 10 years with no problems other than regular maintenance. I think the early cars require a bit more care than the late cars, but they're both hardy vehicles just the same. I left my 83 in America with 216K miles, original engine and headgasket.

Great cars!

I'm driving my '84 to work everyday plus any other trips I take, its about thirty minutes each way. I'm probably 15K miles a year or so at the current rate.

Daily drive about 40 miles. Don't hesitate to take it on a 500 mile round trip every couple weeks to visit my girlfriend in Calgary. Oh and 278,000 miles on the chassis probably 20,000 on the rebuilt engine.

My 83 is my daily driver.

My other vehicle is an Expedition. The Porsche gets better than twice the mileage, so with high gas prices, the Expedition sits in my garage.

I only do about 1,000 miles a month. My longest trip was to Mt Rainier this last summer - maybe 200 miles.

The car was pretty well thrashed when I got it so starting out, I had to fix mass problems. But in the last 6-8 months, it's been great.

It's never let me down, yet.

88 944 NA. I bought it last March with 62k miles on it. It just turned 71K yesterday. I drive it sun, rain or snow. Its a great car. I did spend some $$ for new belts and CV joints, but I expected that when I bought it. Other than new issue of the fan motor not working today it has been trouble free.

mine use to be the daily driver (50 miles a day) until I got the 996. Now it's once a week until the oldest child starts to drive next month.

Ours was my wife's daily driver as long as the weather looked good w/o incident for about 7 years. It has probably been driven in the rain 10 times and never in snow. I got her a Jaguar after she developed fibro-myalgia and found the stick shift uncomfortable. It sat for about 5 years w/ very little use and then I did a substantial amount of work / modifications to it. A lot of things simply needed to be done (73,000 miles). As I really did not care about resale I went way overboard. I now put maybe 2,000 / year and the rest of the time it sits in a neated / air conditioned garage. I took it to Chicago a while back as the weather looked good and had no issues. It has left me stranded once when a fuel pump went out. I have been through 5 911s, a Dinan 5 series BMW, a Jag, and an Audi and have kept the 944 as I really like the little car. I would not hesitate to take it anywhere except for the fact I have an AMG Mercedes that is a killer road car / truck.

944 is a good car for a new driver. It's really too slow (non-turbo) to get into trouble, but it certainly has "curb appeal." I also like the idea of a car that can't get stuffed full of other kids. So many tragic incidents involve a car packed with kids stoked by egos and peer pressure.

Maybe my kid's can wait 10 more years and drive my 944!

My '84 944 used to be the "fun day" car, mostly driven on nice days to / from work and around town. My commute used to be almost 100 miles round trip a day, so I didnt drive it every day.

Then we move to NC and I have an 8 mile commute. Started driving it everyday until I realize my dream of a boxster makes sense, and I picked up a nice '98 Boxster which becomes my everyday driver.

So now the 944 is the not great weather, minimum of 1 day a week driver. Ah well, she doesnt seem jelous of the Boxy yet at least.

Daily Beater here too. There are about 10 days out of the year I wish it were automatic, but those traffic jams are few and far between. I enjoy my 75 mi per day trip... every day. I used to take my vette on Fridays, now.. it just sits until the next 'weekend event'. lol.
