Finally drove my car.....

A few weeks ago, I started the "Why did I buy another 944" thread. I found a really clean 944S for my next race car project.

The car was obviously well-maintained, clean, and straight, and since the seller didn't have it currently insured, I bought it without a PPI or test drive.

After striking the deal, I went back a couple days later with my flatbed trailer to drag the car home. I took it straight to a hangar at the airport, since I was leaving town for a week. It has taken me a couple more weeks to get back to the airport, and unload it from the trailer.

Today I drove the car for the first time. It's like a brand-new car! Everything is crisp and tight. The shift lever has less slop than the brand new one I have in the race car. It idles and runs smoother than any 944 I've driven, and I've driven plenty. I've owned a turbo, an NA, an S2, and now this S. I think I may just use it as a driver for a while. Maybe I'll see if my wife wants to try autocrossing. She is scared of my modified 911, but might be really comfortable autocrossing this car in the stock class.

I think I got really lucky- Buying a car without driving it first. But I knew it would make a great platform for a race car, so I thought I better not let it get away.

Time to go for another drive.......

I don't either but I am damn happy to hear one. I mean, all day long we are reading posts about cars with issues that can be caused by 57 different things! Then, before we can rule out all 57 different symptoms pop up and we are screwed. At some point, we all either have to get a vaccination for our disease (wouldn't it be great to have a turbo too? How about a 968 cab? ooh, I don't have THAT color yet.) or become master mechanics. In the meantime, drive it like you stole it! :-D

It's good to hear that there are good ones to be had. I've read stories on how many many wrecks are out there. Congrats!!!

Thanks, guys- I've had a few of the wrecks! One of the parts cars I had was an S, and I still have the engine from it. I was thinking of putting the S engine into a ratty '87 NA I had for the race car project, but I would still need a few bits and pieces to complete the swap.

Instead, I sold the '87 to a friend who wants to get into racing. It's getting a cage installed right now.

By starting with this S, not only do I have a clean platform for the race car, I have everything I need, plus a spare engine. I think I'm going to have a lot of fun.

I think you will also. I don't have the experience you racers do on a track but after driving an S2 and an S, it seems like the S would be perfect with all that upper torque! Enjoy!

What is nice about the S is that stays in the "Under 2.5 litre" class. With an engine within a few cc's of max, and the four-valve head that breathes so much better at high rpm, it should be a pretty competitive car when properly set up.

Sounds like it is cool. I wish my car would have been 1/2 the car you got! Way to Go!
