N/A LSD Trans with oil cooler?

I'm looking at the tranny options here but I'm not seeing it what I'm told is on a car I bought. I am going to pick up a 1986 944 n/a and I'm told the car has an LSD with an oil cooler. According to clarks garage there is no option for this. The guy has owned the car for the past 15 years and has the original window sticker so I believe him but has anyone actually personally seen a N/A tranny with a LSD and an oil cooler? I know the '86 turbos had oil coolers standard and no LSD so I'd like to make sure I'm not about to get hosed. Help????

Hi, bring 2 floor jacks with you and jack up both rear wheels and spin one wheel. If they both travel the same direction then the 944 does have limited slip. If one travels one way and the other the oposite way then it is an open rear end. Maybe he changed out his rear end at one point?

Hi, From my Knowladge No N/A's ever came with oil coolers. Did you even look under the car and see a oil cooler or are you just going on his word?
I suggest look under the car for yourself and see if there is one and if there is and the car is a LSD then most likely someone has changed the tranny before. I have a full write up sheet with all N/A Tranny's and they never came with oil coolers.

I'm going to scope it out before I pay for the car. I am driving 7 hours to get the thing and I'm going to be pissed if it doesn't have an LSD. I will keep everyone informed.

I have an 83 model english import and it's fitted with the option 220, I think, LSD. After being used to the LSD I don't know how anyone could go without one, especially in the wet or on dirt when its so nice to be able to steer with both ends of the vehicle.

ALL LSD options came with a Tranny Oil cooler, SO he might not mean a engine Oil cooler, From what I understand (and I could BE wrong) 99% of all 944 where not LSD, and MOST 951 had LSD, But all LSD tranny's had a Tranny oil cooler stock. So he may have waped.

Not all LSD's came with an cooler. I have an LSD and it doesn't have one. Only LSD's from Turbo's had coolers. NA's didn't. And not all Turbo's came with LSD's either.

Porsche has published a fact sheet for all of their transaxels - the following information is included here.

Code 5Y 944 (1985.5 - 1988) Without LSD
Code 5Z 944 ( 1985.5 - 1988) With LSD (M220)
Code 5S 944 (1985.5 - 1988) Without LSD
Code 7V 944 (1985.5 - 1988) With LSD
Code 5P 944 (1985.5 - 1988) With oil cooler only - no LSD
Code 5R 944 (1985.5 - 1988) With LSD and Oil Cooler

All of the above coded trans are to include the 1986 944's - there are more codes for other years - 4 1/2 pages of single spaced listings to be a little more exact (As I have picked them out and typed them on pages).

See Porsche Parts and Technical Reference Catalog - Water Cooled Models 1977- 1991

See also Clark's Garage Trans-04, Transaxle - General Information, codes.

Y'all have pfunn - If it's not fun don't do it.

and thanks for this great site - -

Sorry I forgot -

All of these Codes are stamped on top of each Trans. It is located on the top flat of the Transaxle Bellhousing - on the very top front of the bellhousing is a flat spot and close to the left side running front to back is where the code is stamped - It will give the trans code and the build date in this number

example : 5P15105 - 5P trans code, 15 day, 10 month, 5 (1985) year.

I can attest to not LSD trannies have oil cooler lines. I sold 2, one off a turbo and one off an S, both without oil cooler lines but the '86 turbos had oil cooler lines stock but the LSD was still an option. Back to the original topic....

I picked the car up today and the LSD tranny was installed after the original exploded. I have the receipt for it so when I get the car apart I can check the code and find out where it came from. For all I know it's a turbo tranny in a N/A car. We'll see....

No n/a LSD have oil coolers. All 86 944 turbos had oil coolers (even without LSD) and NOT all LSD trannies on turbos had trans oil coolers. All 88 turbo S and 89 turbos had LSD AND trans oil coolers.

Very few non turbo S 951s had LSDs and even fewer 944 n/a had LSDs.
