87 924s auto trans slip: Many questions

car has 86k miles. 2.5 auto. dont know too much about the car its my girlfriends and i never really had to work on it. The trans seems to slip out of first gear then jerk back in hard just like its low on fluid. So please help!!

#1 Car seems to be leaking oil out of the back of the valve cover(was going to fix this next weekend!). But now that i think, it doesnt smell like motor oil. and now the trans is slipping. Is there auto trans fluid lines or anything anywhere near the exhaust manifold that could be leaking? It leaves little puffs of smoke every once in a while.

#2 where is the trans dipstick? I know its a rear trans axle and i havent really poked around. does it even have a dipstick? I know porsche/audi/vw have a knack for leaving things like that out

#3 is there any common trans leaks? where?

#4 what color/type is the trans fluid? where can i buy it? The oil dripping did seem to be reddish like atf but i couldnt really tell from the quick look i took. Just asumed it was the valve cover

#5 worst case scenario...how much will it cost me to swap it to a manual and trade her my camaro for her 924?

Thanks for any help!!! greatly appreciated

1. The trans fluid cooler lines go directly over the exhaust manifold. This is Porsche's way to make sure that the trans fluid is nice and hot *sarcasm*

2. There is a plastic level resevoir by the rear of the transaxle.

3. Where ever there are 20 year old rubber lines, its possible for them to leak any time.

4. I believe its mercon III and its reddish in color.

5. The cheapest way for a conversion is with a parts car. You will be know your car intimately by the time you are able to do a conversion. I have done 3 conversions already and you can find some info I posted on the *other* renn site. Its probably cheaper to trade the auto and pay cash for a 5 speed. Where are you located?

Oil leak is probably from a small cover on the back of the cam tower. It's a three dollar cork gasket held on by three screws. I know of one instance where that leaked and caught the car on fire, so get it fixed quickly. I think your other questions were answered.
